. am, the tiionthly meeting of the Dog and Elliot River Total Abstinence Society was held in Mr. Duncan M‘Can- nal’s house, Long Creek; and although the evening was rainy, upwards ofthirty assembled on the occasion. The President, (Mr. John Currie) took the chair, and stated the objects of the meeting, which were the extension of tempe- rance, on total abstinence principles, and the suppression of vice. The office-bearers, Whose zeal iii the cause oftem- pérance deservcd commendation, addressed the meeting, in which they endeavoured to point outthe evils resulting ti-om the use of intoxicating drinks. Their appeal was not in vain—Jour took the pledge, While others were almost per- suaded to take it also. This Society was organised in March last, through the exertions of Mr. Bain, one ofthe contractors for erecting!r the Colonial Building, and now number's eighty-two. A Shark measnring 8 feet 9 inches in length, was caught at Orr’s Creek, New Glasgow, on Thursday last. It had got into the mud. and being unable to extricate itself, was dispatched by James Cliristie,.loitier, with a pitch fork, as- sisted by another man, armed with a mall. Christie narrowly escaped being seized by the monster.

Daphne, which arrived here on Wednesday last, give a melancholy picture of the ra- vages committed by the fever which has for some time past been raging in those islands.
