' Proper care given to the new- born calf is well repaid in sub- sequent growth and general health. Since the calf at birth is highly susceptible to disease. a clean, dry, well-bedded maternity stall. free from dirt, is essential. To avoid infection. apply an antiseptic such as tincture of iodine to the level.

It is important that the calf get the mother's colostrum. The anti- bodies contained in the colostrum protect the new-born calf against diseases, particularly those of the digestive system. The vitamin A content of colostrum may be ten Ito one hundred times that of or- dinary milk; it 1e also richer in other vitamins and minerals, and contains up to 17 per cent more protein than ordinary milk. As the young calf has a low storage of vitamin A and requires a large amount of protein. the value of the colostrum is readily seen.

A common practice is to leave the calf with its mother for the first day. It is not advisable, how- over. to leave the calf with the dairy cow for more than 24 hours, ll an excess quantity of milk may qause scours. The practice follow- ed at the Central Experimental Iarm, Ottawa, says V8. Logan of the Animal Husbandry Division, is 0o leave the calf with the mother several hours after birth, long en- iugb for its coat to be thoroughly licked. This gives the calf a sleek nether than a rough appearance when dry. The calf receives its but meal of colostrum from the mother or from an open pail.

The calf will learn to drink more Ieadily if it is allowed to become nuts hungry, feeding about 12 to

hours after separating it from its mother. An effective method of kainlni the‘ calf to drink is to hat it into a corner and stand astside its neck to keep it in one position. Holding a pail containing I small amount of fresh. clean col- ostrum in one hand, dip the finger d the other hand in the milk, and while the calf is sucking the fing- ers. work its nose down to the milk. Slaughter Cattle

Toronto had 7,000 cattle on of- fer plus 500 carried from the pre- vlous week and the estimated holdover at the close was 500 head, mostly common steers and heifers and stocker cattle. Fed yearlings, good butcher cows and bulls were generally steady, but steers and heifers, good to choice, were barely steady- to 50c lower,- and common to medium killers Best of the weighty steers made $22.50, good light steers $20.50 to $21.50, good heifers $20.50 to $21. Good cows rated $14 to $14.50, an odd $15, and good bulls closed strong at $15. 0 to $17.50.

At ontreal, receipts totalled 2,939 cattle. The market was act- ive and prices steady, except for the lower grades cows, which were weaker. Good light steers brought $21 to $22, mediums $16 to $18.50, and com- mon down to $13. Heavy steers were in demand, with a choice load topping at $23. Good cows were weighed at $15 to $16.50, mediums $13 to $15. common down to $10.50, and canners and cutters $8 to $10. Good bulls $15 to $18.50.

Cattle for sale at Winnipeg to- talled 7200 head, and an expected carryover of around 300 head was in sight at the close on Thursday. Lower outside markets and con- tinuing hot weather had a depres- sing effect on the trade, and while early sales were about steady the buyers were putting pressure on all but top quality cattle. Good brandable cattle finished about steady but all other classes were 50c or more lower. Choice steers sold for $22 to $22.50, good $19 to $21, good cows $13 to M350, and canners and cutters down to a low of $9.

Calgary had 3,685 cattle and estimated 425 would be unsold at the close. Offerings were mostly plain and slowed trading. While good to choice steers were about steady early, they later develo ed a weaker undertone and buyers were grading closer on the lower grades. Choice steers $21.50 to $22, good $20.25 to $21.25, mediums downward to $17.50, good cows $12.50 to $13, mediums $11.25 to $12, canners and cutters $8.50 to

11. - Edmonton had 2,414 cattle, all sold, mostly plain to medium grassers, with odd lots of good grass steers and heifers. Some tdp steers sold up to $20.50, odd light- weight helfers $18 to $19, with most good to choice steers $19 to $20. Good cows brought $12 to $13 and mediums $10.50 to $11.50.

At Vancouver the first run of cattle arrived on the 18th and 17th of August, 11 cars from William's Lake and 7 cars from Southern Carlboo. Good to choice heavy grass steers were traded at $19 l" $22, some good heifers at $19, some young cows at $17.

Stooker And Feeder Cattle

Stocker and feeder cattle were in fair demand at generally steady prices. Toronto paid $17 to $17.50 for good stockers, with a few loads of shortkeep feeders up to $18.50. Winnipeg sold good feeder steers at $10 to $17, common kinds down to $13; Calgary $16 to $17 on good kinds; while Edmonton had a strong demand and an in- sufficient supply to fill require- ments, placing good feeder [steers at $15 to $17. Saskatoon paid $15 on good feeders; Prince Albert $14.50 to $15; Moose Jaw 155-50 to $16.50; and Relifia $14 to $15.

However, sincel our knowledge of the ‘why’ of. polio epldeml is extremely~ scanty, there is no more reason for forecasting an epidemic than| for prophesying that there will be, none.” ;

The statement points out that, while there are specific preven-‘ tives for whooping cough and» diphtheria, there is, unfortunate-I ly, no such preventive for polio-- However, there are sanitary pre-_ cautions which should be follow- ed. Here is common sense advice‘ offered by health officers through- out Canada— People should llve outdoors as much as possible and make sure of good ventilation when indoors. Water which is not chlorinated should beboiled. Milk supplies should be pasteurized. Streams polluted by sewage should not be used for bathing. Rubbish should be burned o ‘sposed of in pro- per receptacles. Flles and mos- qultos should be kept out of the home. Dusting should be done with a damp cloth, and sweeping with an electric cleaner. Fatigue and crowds should be avoided.

The Health League statement was issued in connection with forthcoming National Immunization Week, September 11th (o 17th. and pointed out that The public should realize that it has a definite duty to see that children are immun- ized agalnst diphtheria and whoop- ing cough, both of which can be prevented-and each of which usu- ally takes greater annual toll among Canada's children than does polio for which, so far, there ha! been discovered no specific pre- ventlve. The Health League feels that the general public should be- come n5 concerned about the tragic effects of diphtheria and whooping cough as they are about possible polio after effects.
