branch managers have complete and intimate knowledge of each local situation and are in close touch with crop conditions in all sections of the districts mentioned.

General

Th1! Yelir‘: total wheat crop is estimated to be slightly higher than that of last year, but an out- standing festurc is the large per- centage of low grade wheat. The Dominion Bureau of Statistics cs- timatea the wheat production of the three Prairie Provinces at 272.- 000.000 bushels. This is 8,000,000 in excess of last year's figure and compares with s. ten-year average of 367,700,000 “usheis. The 1935 wheat acreage in the Prairie Prov- inces, estimated at 23 293,000 acres, was practically the same as that of last year. Production of coarse grains was substantially increased and for the most part feed supplies will be sufficient. Oats are estim- ated at 296,000,000 bushels and barley at 73,000,000. Threshing is now practically completed, in the Peace River district, Deliv- eries of wheat by farmers to coun- try elevators from August 1st to October llth totalled 119,987,000 bushels, compared with 109,861,000 bushels during the same period last year. In Quebec Province there were good yields of coarse grains and hay, maple syrup and tobacco, but the potato crop was under av- erage and the apple crop light. In Ontario, there were good crops of grain and a heavy crop of hay. Roots were a. fair crop, and crops of peas, corn and tomatoes were satisfactory. Small fruits were av- erage, with an exceptionally large strawberry crop. Winter apples and pears were a light/crop, and peach- es plentiful but small. Tobacco was an excellent crop. In the Maritime Provinces crop yields generally were fair, with apples an above av- erase crop of good quality. In Brit- isii Columbia there were good yields of grain, hay and potatoes. The yield of tomatoes was poor; other vegetable production was normal. The apple crop was, somewhat smaller than that of last year but of good quality. Crops of cherries, apricots. peaches and plums were below average. Details follow:-

Prairic Provinces

Seeding operations were late in getting under way, and continued well into June, due to cold weather, snows and rains. These factors battered soil moisture conditions and the crop season opened under more favourable circumstances than for several years. with the exception of a few districts, ger- mination and early development of the grain crop were generally sat- isfactory. Absence of adequate rain- fall became serious in southwest- ern Saskatchewan, southern Alber- ta and along the Alberta-Saskatch- ewan border, towards theend oi’ June, and the damaging effect later became apparent. First indi- cations or rust were observed in Manitoba about the beginning of July and- quickly spread until all Manitoba and large areas in Sask- atchewan were infected. Crops de- teriorated rapidly and suffered ex- tensive damage which resulted in almost total failure to hard wheat crops in many districts. Frost took a. heavy toil in parts of Baskatch. ewan, north central and northern Alberta. It is estimated that 60.- oo0,000 bushels of the total wheat production will be unfit for mill- 1118. clue to the generally light weight of the shrunken kernel, caused by deterioration from mist and frost. Average wheat yields’ by provinces. as estimated by the Do- minion Bureau of Statistics. fol- low: Manitoba 7.0 bushels, $35k- atchewan 10.4, Alberta 15.5. The Ai- beris sugar beet yield is estimated It 140.000 tons. compared with 175,- 000 last year. but the sugar con- tent is higher. Boll moisture condi- tiona are good in Manitoba but only fair in Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Province of Quebec Seeding operations were delayed by adverse weather and in some sections into planted grains did not properly mature. Oats suffered somewhat from rust. but yields of this and other coarse grain crops, while slightly less than those of last year. were generally good. Hay was s. good average crop in the lower Si. Lawrence district and an excellent one in the Eastem Tawn- shipfi and Ottawa Valley. Hot weather during August favoured the growth of fodder corn which yielded heavily. The potato crop will be slightly under average in quantity, with some rot reported; other roots are fair to good. The apple crop is light. Pasturagc has been ample throughout the season. Tobaccojd. now drying normally; the crop is larger than that- of 1934 and of good quality. Produc- tion of maple syrup and sugar last spring was well up to avcrsg‘ in both quantity and quality, voiunn being 30% higher than that of the preceding year; 911m obtained were. however, sotnewhgt lcwet than in i934.

wheat, oats and barley are respect- ively 555,100 acres and 23.9 bushels, £376,700 acres and 38.7 bushels, and 523,000 npress-nd 32.6 bushels, which compares with 425,000 acres and 15.8 bushels, 2,390,800 acres and 34.1 bushels. 484,900 scressnd 30.4 bushels for 1934. Hay was a heavy crop. estimated at 7,192,600 tons, compared with 4,286,500 tons last year. ‘The yield of fodder corn is estimated at 9.8 torts per acre and the total crop at 3.173.300 tons against 2,990,000 tons inst year. Pasturage has been excellent dur- ing the season and still affords good grazing. Sugar beets are ex- peeled to yield-a. tonnage of 366,- 000, compared with 265,700 last year, but plants this year suffered from leaf blight which will slightly lower the sugar content. Potatoes are below normal, while turnips and mangels are smaller in size with n fair yield. A satisfactory puck of-pess, corn and tomatoes has been completed. Beans are a good average crop. Small fruits were average, with an exceptionally large crop of strawberries. Early apples were good, but winter var- ieties are s light yield. Peaches, while plentiful, were small. Pears were a light crop. Grapes were damaged by early frosts and the crop is now estimated at from 10% lo 15% below normal. The flue- cured tobacco crop is one of the finest ever produced in Ontario. tkdour and quality are above av- erage, with production from 31.000 acres placed at 28,675,000 lbs. com- pared wiih 24,000 acres which pro- duccd 21.860000 lbs. in 1934. The average yield of buriey tobacco, which is of excellent quality and curing well, is cstima/ted at 1,200 to 1,300 lbs, per acre resulting in a.n output of 11.250000 lbs., as com- pared with 7,950,000 lbs. last year. There were 2,000 acres plant/ed to dark tobacco which is of good yield and quality. -

Maritime Provinces

Beading and planting operations throughout the Maritimes were re- tarded last spring by adverse weather conditions. In Prince Ed- ward Island a. good crop of hay was harvested. with fair to avcrag: results obtained in the other two provinces. Excessive heat. and lack of moisture during August brought grains too rapidly to maturity. re- sulting in short straw and patchy yields, more especially in New Brunswick and Nova. Scotls. Root crops. pastures and fruits were greatly benefited by September rains and while the yield of po- tatoes is generally under average the quality is good. Turnipa and mangels promise fair to average results. The harvesting of an above-average apple crop is pro- ceedbig in the Annapolis Valley, with the fruit of good quality, aise and colour. Pastures rema’ ’ in fair to good condition n ghoul. the season, with the exception of a period in mid-aununer.

Province cf British Columbia

Spring opened late and the aca- son was backward. Precipitation generally p. ted ITOWth. and grain crops of good quality and yield were harvested. The first out of alfalfa was damaged by rain. Later hay crops were satis- factory. Potbtoes were of good qual-

The Fall 0f the Leaf

0n Sunday, Oct. 13th. in the

Scottish Presbyterian Kirk of Canoe Cove, the Minister, Rev. J. W. 8. Lowry, delivered a. seasonable ser- mon from the words of Isaiah 60:6.‘ “We ail do fade as a. leaf", in the‘ course of which he said that the‘ Bible was the most. up to date book in all the wide rang, of the liter- ature of the ages. The sacred writ- ers gsvc messages and lessons for all times and places. and for all conditions and circumstances. The seasons were not. overlooked by thorn. Indeed “the spirit of the Book has ransacked mention to lay its treasures on Jehovah's altar, and has woven a garland for the brow of Immanuel, the flowers of which have been milled from the gardens of the universe." ' I: We learn an estimate of our life upon earth. from the fact. that we are all frail as a. leaf. w, are liable to forget that the only thing certain about this lifs is its uncer- tainty; the one thing certain about it is that we must all leave it. And knowing the carelessness of mankind in this regard, Go ‘s Spirit has covered the Word wit apt ii- iurtrsticns to press home upon our minds the truth that “the fashion of ‘this world passeth away." The busy round of daily life, not only tends to cloud our vision of things eternal, but it shuts of! from ser- ious reflection the remembrance that everything around us is to fade and is fading, and that life itself is dbbing m: sway.

The lesson of’ our gradual decay is set forth in the falling leaf. Think of how many successive gen- erations of thehuman family have faded and gone from this world £11168 this text was written. More than one third of this century has gone, and in less than seventy years more, the great majority of the present population of the world shall have pas'ed off this scene of existence, and shall have taken their flight into the eternal and unchangeabe world.

II. Before the leaf falls, it. be- _gins to decay, There is often a marked change on the foliage be- fore the leaf fails to the ground. And, ch. how gently and how beau- tifully does the leaf fail down in- to the dust. It sometimes seems as if it were unwilling to let go its hold. Moving about. theze Autumn days, I have observed how roftiy, how orderly, the leaf drops down to dusty death; its fall is so beau- tifully and naturally gentle, and s0 timely. We take the falling of the leaf very much as a matter of course, and this renders many 1n- sensible to the impressive lessons to be derived from this occurrence in the world of nature.

No incident here happens ' by chance. The vary hairs of our head arc all numbered. Even s. sparrow cannot fall to the ground without our Heavenly Father's pennimion.

III. Bear ln mind too, that the leaf fails by the Divine permlssiomi So the tender leaf cannst m1 to‘ the 31011118! until its nppointid time.’ in the calendar of God. A touch of frost may cause the tender leaf to wither, and its green verdure to fade; but it will not he severed from the branch. nor flutter through the air, until God says so “by.th" word of His mouth." As the drew of rain, and the small particles cf snow are from the Imrd-"the rair cometh down and the snow from beaver-so are the fickle wander- lngwinds from the different points of the sky, that wither the grass and scatter the leaves beneath our feet. Then the leaves of one searon fail to make way for those of an- other; likewise “one generation cometh and another goeth." The failing leaf suggests to us the ren- ovation and new life which foi- lows our dissolution here. The seed cast into the ground dies, but it lives again, tha warm heal; of spring causes the tender bud to shoot forth; the winter's cold and icy reign, is followed by the warmth and life of the summer's sunshine. Bo man dies and lives again. The dark- ness and dezolation of the tomb are succeeded by the light and life of everlasting day.
