To obtain this result two scientists shut themselves with their subject in a laboratory entirely without light. They |
placed the hand which was to serve for the experiment in a bath of hydroqui- none, tue underside of the fingers be- ing applied to a plate of gelatino-bro- | mure of silver. The pose lasted 15 to 20 minutes.
The plate of gelatino-brommure, treat- | ed according to the customary methods, | gave 2 proof as curious as it is instruct- ive.
One saw the lines of the ends of the fingers with the effluvia given off from them like a kind of spray. On the cor- per of the plate, in the upper left hand corner, there appeared a fragment of detached skin floating in the bath, which emits effluvia directly in the form of vertical filaments. Al] the lit- tle white points which were seen on the black background of the proof repre- sented the dust of effluvia floating in the bath of hydroquinone.
Dr. Luijs did not stop there with his researches. He proposed also to record the effluvia of the eyes and the ears. New experiments have given excellent results in this respect, and even plates influenced from a distance registered very faithfully the impressions felt.
It goes without saying, says the emi-
ciety of Biology, that these new stndies will give a new meaning to a series of phenomena long known as suggestive conceptions in default of any demon- sration of their reality.

Itis proved that there is given off Rormally from the human body ina continuous manner « special fluid which Seems to be an essential manifesta- tion of life, and which exteriorizes it- self, as lately Colonel de Rochas has tried to prove with so much zeal. He terms it the exteriorization of sensibil- ity. Several objections were raised on the examination of the first proof of the fingers, effluvia. Certain incredulous persons asked if the impressions pro- faced on the plate of gelatino bromure did not result simply from the contact of the fingers.
To answer these critics, Dr. Luijs in- sulated two fingers, avoiding all contact With the plate. The result was a proof Which bore three impressions like the first and two others less developed, but yet convincing.
We may be sure, says the doctor, that
this process is likely to bave prolific re- wults in physiology and in pathology. It is easy of application and is within the Teach of all persons who have an ele- mentary knowledge of photography. The immersion can be effected in an or- dinary bath of 9-12. _One can thus record the variation of the nervous force which is incessantly fiven oft from the digital extremities of human beings. It varies according to age, sex, the different periods of the day und the state of emotion which sets the homan being vibrating.

Light Cure For Rheumatism.
A St. Petersburg physician has been experimenting with electric lights as a cure for rheumatism with great success, as he reports cures of 14 out of 18 cases of chronic rheumatism, 2 out of 4 cases of neurosis and of all the cases of sciatica and lumbago so treated. The patient, wearing blue glasses, is placed about five feet from a powerful arc light pro- vided with a reflector, and is protected by a screen in which is cut an aperture to allow the light to fall upon the part affected, thr temperature being never raised more than 4 degrees above nor- mal. The patient is exposed from 45 seconds to 2 minutes.
During the experiments it was ob- served that after six or cight hours’ ex- posure itching and tingling are felt, the ski» reddens and in 48 hours peels off. The doctor says that there has been a notable diminution in the number of cases ot rheumatism, neuralgia, mi- graine and other nervous diseases among electric workmen, which he attributes to the effects of the are light.—Ex- change.
Rubber Lined Warships.
In French naval) circles there is again some talk of adcpting a ‘‘filling’’ be- tween the interskin and the inner shell. At present cellulose and corn pith seem to have gone out of favor, and it is now proposed to utilize caoutchouc, or some similar elastic substance, so that even should the vessel or shot penetsate, the rent will close again, and only a small quantity of water be admitted. Tests have already been made, a structure rep- resenting a small part of the length of a vessel being fitted with the cellular | double sides filled with caoutchouc and it was perforated within and outside at various depths above and below the water line and allowed to float in the river, and yet it was found after a con- siderable time that only a few pints of water had leaked through the interior. —Industries and Iron.
