A sTEAMER went from Kingston, Ont., to Cape Vincent on Saturday. ‘There was lit- tle ditticulty in breaking the ice, which ex- tends but two miles from the shore. This trip so early in the season is unprecedented.
Mr. James Taytor, his wife and Miss McDonald, of St. Peter's Island, narrowly escaped drowning last night. On going up the West River, the ice broke, and all were for some time m great danger. The ladies were dragged out by the reins. Mr. Tay- lor’s horse died soon after being taken out.
Ar London, Ont., Z. H. Hargraves is, under arrest for barbarous treatment to a Rye orphan employed in his hair-dressing establishment. He had been in the habit of hangi ig her up by the hands, her toes barely touching the tloor, keeping her in that posi- tion a long time, another girl feeding her witha spoon. Another time he locked her in a dark room a day and night, with noth- ing on but athin garment. The case will go to a higher court.
Cart. SHaw, of the steamer Beta, which arrived at Halifax from St. Thomas and Bermuda, on Sunday, reports, Feb. 20, on the outward passage, in lat. 36 50, long. 64 15, passed the barque Orland», of P. E. Is- land, waterlogged and abandoned, with fore and mizzen-mast gone; mainmast gone be- low the cap, and bowsprit and jibboom standing; her decks were floating level with the water. The Orlundo, Capt. Kickham, sailed from Baltimore Jan. 30, for Glouces- ter, G. B. She was a new vessel, owned by Messrs. Hyndman Bros., of this city, and insured for $2,000 in a Halifax office.
Tue rioting which has taken place in Montreal within the past few days, in the name of religion, retlects very little credit on either of the parties who were engaged init. Itis avery unnecessary task to ex- pose the folly of those who persist in fo- wnenting ancient feuds and use sticks, stones, and pisiols to make up for their lack of logic. Montreal has been far too often given up to rioters, and on mere occasions than one the civil authorities have proved themselves disyracefully weak and unable to cope with the organized mobs who have dis- turbed the peace of that city. We trust that during the present week there will be a return to reason among the members of the hostile camps, and that St. Patrick’s Day will be allowe to pass without bloodshed. — St. John Lelegraph.
A pispatcu from Pictou says Simon Mc- Leod, vf Plaintield, Rogers Hull, Pictou Co., N. S., came to town some time in December last and wished to be put under restraint, as he was‘afraid he would do some injury to himself or others. The authori- ties did not see how they could do anything, but George Donaldson took him to his boarding house and took care of him. He was reported to have been seen shortly after near a barnin the rear of the town, but was not heard frou again till p. m., when Mr. James Mackinlay found him sitting under a tree in the woods near Fisher's pond, just outside the town, dead. One end ot his comforter was fastened to two amall twigs, and the other around his neck. He appeared as if he had died withouta struggle. He had to be cut out of the ice. When tirst seen it was thought to be a man lighting his pipe. ‘There must have been a

TueEre is a widow living in a slum off Lockman street, Halifax, whose case is in- deed a pitiable one. She owns a suall house, in one room of which she lives, while the rest of the house is rented to two ten- ants, who pay her 80 cents a week each. This amount-—$1.60—is all that she has to keep herself, two boys and four cows. Of course the cows were almost starved, and the neighbors were kept awake at nignt by their moaning. ‘I'he case was reported to Mr. Naylor, Secretary of the S. P. C. A, who visited the place. He found four cows crowded into a shed not large enough for one, the floor nearly a foot deep in filtu, the poor animals so weak from want of food that they could not stand. The woman was confined to her bed and was not in posses- sion of her right mind. She had no furni- ture in her room save a broken stove and a heap of rags for a bed. ‘The boys who had to look after the cows did not clean them, but, to save trouble, clipped their tails close off so that they could not get them dirty. The cows from their condition were con.- paratively valueless. Mr. Naylor had one cow removed and the others properly looked after. Some housekeepers, who pride them- selves on their economy, would perhaps be puzzled to know how to provide food, fuel,
growing boys, and food for four cows, and make $1.60 a week cover the whole expense. It may well be said that one-half of the world does not know how the other half

Sir,—In these days of universal smoking, | when 99 per cent. of our mile population use | the narcotic herb, the question should be :! Where can we get the best tobacco? It is! true that the weed is imported in large quan-! tities from abroad, and is supposed to be good because it is foreign, but such an idea is utter- ly at variance with the experience of competent judges, who pronounce the article manufac- tured by our fellow-townsmen, Hickey &' Stewart, much superior to anything of the kind introduced here. Last autumn this firm added to their establishment improved ma- thiaery for the manufacture of tobacco, equal to any in the Dominion, and, with the facili- ties at their command, can fill orders with juick despatch. It would be well for our dealers in this article to test the quality of the tobacco before ordering from a foreign house, an. confine their business to the Island, when' an article can be procured which is acknow- ledged to be better than that imported. It is nothing but right to foster our own home manufacturers in every department, and give our patronage to those living amongst us, in | stead of allowing our Island operatives to eke | out a miserable existence, while goods are. being imported from other countries no better than ourown. The old alage, that ‘‘ioreign birds have beautiful feathers,” is too often acted upon and those of home neglected.
