Gems of Thought.

The basis of good manners is self reliance.

The most difficult thing in life is to know yourself,

Sunday is the golden clasp that binds together the volume of the week.

Be not forgetful to entertain strang ers; for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

Modest humility is beauty’s crown, for the beautiful is a hidden thing and shrinks trom its own power.

Not nations, nor armies, have ad vanced the race, but here and there, in the course of ages, an individual has stood up and cast his shadow over the world.

Have the courage to show your re- spect for honesty, in whatever guise it appears ; and your contempt for dis- honesty and duplicity, by whomsoever exhibited.

Self-distrust is the cause ot most of our failures. In the assurance of strength there is strength, and they are the weakest, however strong, who have no faith in themselves or their } OwWwers.

Whatever you attempt, do it with strength. Determination is omnipot- ent. If the prospect is somewhat darkened, put the fire of resolution to your soul, and kindle a flame that no- thing but death can extinguish.

Whatever you wish your child to be, be it yourself. If you wish your child to be happy, sober, truthful, affection- ate, honest, and godly, be yourself’ all these. If you wish it to be lazy and sulky, a liar and a thief, a drunkard and a swearer, be yourseli' all these.

Do not be afraid of diminishing your own happiness by promoting that of others. He who labors wholly for the benefit of others, and, as it were, forgets himself, is far happier than the man who makes himself the sole object of all his affections and exertions.

Venerate four characters: the san- guine, who has checked volatility and the rage for pleasure; the choleric. who has subdued passion and pride ; | the phlegmatic, emerged from indo- lence; and the melancholic, who has dismissed avarice, suspicion, and as- perity.

If we create imaginary wants, why do we not create imaginary satisfac- tions? It was the happier frenzy of the two to be like the mad Athenian, who thought all the ships that came into the harbor to be his own, than be still tormenting ourselves with insati- able desires.

Honor your engagements. If you promise to meet a man, or do a certain thing at a certain moment, be ready at the appointed time. If you go out on business, attend promptly to the mat ter in hand, and then as promptly go about our own business. Do not stop to tell stories in business hours. If you have a place of business, be found there when wanted.

The people who are always anxious to bestow contidence in their neighbors are unmitigated nuisances. There are some things one does not care to know, and it is a great annoyance to have a gossiping neighbor insist upon making you the depository of such unpalatable secrets, and then, perhaps, going on
