What Gold Cannot Buy.
A late author very truthfully says :— “Gold cannot buy happiness, and the parents who compel their daughters to marry for station or money commit a most grievous sin against humanity and God. And a woman who marries a churl for his wealth will find that she has made a terrible bargain—that all the glitter are of a heartless grandeur are phosphorescent glitterings ot heart-wretchedness; that her lite will be one gilded misery, that her old age will be like a crag on the bleak side of the desert mountain, where cold moon- beams sometimes glitter, and no birds sing bat wild storms howl and thun- ders roar, and through the sweeping storms shall be heard the stern voice of the Almighty, saying, ‘Your riches are corrupted, your garments are moth eaten, your gold and silver are eanker- ed, and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and eat your flesh as if it were fire.’ ”’

The Blues.

“Do you ever have the blues,” asked a sufferer from that malady, ‘and is there a cure for them?” Certainly ; plenty of them; just as there are for chills and fever, but in like manner they will not always work. We know one man who walks off an attack, an- other who rows it off, and another who rides it off in the saddle. These are al) dyspeptics. The same prescriptions, aided perhaps by lemon juice or diluted nitro muriatic acid, often proves effect- ‘ve in the ease of billious folk. When the cause is, as it often is, nervous ex- haustion, a good remedy is cessation of all work, religious or secular, plenty o! sleep, and if the constitution can bear it, cold water bathing. Always ap ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, for it is not an easy tusk to fightotf the blues. Misfortune, sorrow, individual temperament, and even the accidents of wind and weather, often combine to weigh down the soul until, in extreme instances, insanity may be the result. But thereis no rule to cure every one; each must find out what is the most effectual in his own case, and persevere with it to the end.

Thought it Made no Difference.
“That tenon does not fit the mortise by a quarter of an inch,” said an em- ployer to a young carpenter who had just begun to work for him.
“T thought that for a garden gate you would not be particular, and it would make no difference,” answered the young man.
But it did make a difference, It made just the difference between the young carpenter having a steady, sum- mer job, at good wages, and having the time unoccupied on his hands.
The employer found no other fault; but when the gate was finished, be paid the maker, without another word, and dismissed him. The next dsy there was another man in his place. He happened to be a man who thought it did make a difference how everything was done; he always did his best; and he kept his situation to the end of the 82as0n.
So it happens. Some little thing, which was not expected to attract at- tention, is noticed by some one to whom the excellence of the work has com- mended itself, and the man who has made pains-taking the rule of all his labour is surprised by a sudden and un- looked-for accession of good fortune. He has been brought into note by some inconsidered trifle, which was weil done merely because it was his habit to do everything ar well as possible.
On the other hand, many & man who is lamenting his ill-fortune, and don't know what to attribute it to, owes it to some such carelessness in the way of doing his work as that which doomed
the young carpenter to a summer of
p-ofitless idleness. Men are by no means always told by
what particular act they are judged 51
but any good performance is always liable to make, and any bad perform- ance is alway liable to mar, a fortune.
