Such is not the ease and we warn our country reader to beware of the fraud.

A pispure occurred at the sale of a resi- dence in Oshawa, Ont., recently which, if car- ried to the courts, will decide a point that often arises at sales by auction. A man had bid $,700, and just as the auctioneer knocked the property down to him, another man made the same bid, The auctioneer put the property up again and knocked it down to the second man at $50 of an advance. The first protested against this, made an offer of the required deposit, and demanded to be put in possession of the property. He contends

that it failed to reach the auctioneer, and that, if his bid were admitted to be good, it would enable anyone to break up a sale by claiming to have put in a bid,

On Saturday night three churches were amend ~ Nhe Bank Street Presbyterian Church, St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church and St. Alban’s Episcopal.

These fires took place at the same hour, and alarms were consequently given from different-localities at the same time, creat- ing great confusion among the fire brigades.

The Bank street Church was badly eutted, nething being left but the walls. —

in St. Jeseph’s chureh the fire was put out before much harm was done. The tabernacle was broken open and the chalice carried away.

St. Albans was considerably damaged in- side. Further examination shows that St. Alban’s Presbyterian Church had also re- ceived attention— attempts having been made to enter it.

it is confidently ascertained that the at- tempts have been made in accordance with a concerted scheme of widespread arson.

The latest election returns are as fol- lows :—

Liberals elected at this election, 235 ; at last election from same constituencies, 179.

Conservatives at this election elected, 137 ; at the last, 193.

Fiome Rulers at this election elected, 16 ; at the last, 16.

Thus far elected at this election, 388 ; at last S88. Nett Liberal gain over Conferv- attves, 54; over Home Rulers, 2-- Total, 56.

The representation in the last Parlia- ment was: Conservatives, 345; Liberals, 245, and-Home Rulers, 60. There are still 262 seats to hear from.

In 1874 they were represented by 152

Conservatives, 60 Liberals, 46 Home Rulers.

Should these districts remain relatively unchanged, which is improbable, the

representation in the next Parliament will stand, Liberals, 301, Conservatives, 289, Home Rulers, 60. The Liberal nett gain is now fifty seats.

He has discovered a new process of extracting gold frem worked-out refuse or tailings, while ex- amining tailings to find platinum. His agents have secured tlie control of the immense quan- tities of tailings in California and extensive works will be erected by a new company at Orrville, Cal., where Edison claims fifty mil- liens can be extracted from the tailings of that vicinity alore.

At Vernon River, on Monday, April Ist, of cengestion of the lungs, Jeremiah Enman, in the 64th year of his age. The deceased was well known and highly respected in the com- munity.
