Excursion TO SuMMeRsipE.—On Monday next, the charming opera Pinafore will be per- formed at Summerside, under the direction of Mr. Earle. In connection with the perform- ance a very pleasant excursion has been ar- ranged. A special train will leave Charlotte- town at 4 o'clock, local time, for Summerside, and passengers from this city can take this train and return the same night. The trip up and down in company with the ‘‘ right good crew” will, no doubt, be most attractive, and it goes without saying that all whogo on the excursion will thoroughly enjoy themselves.

A LirrLe Crowpep.—It is stated that the congressional:committee appointed to investi gate the immigration business, report the dis- covery of a single square mile of territory in New York city where 270,900 people live, which is 8,000 more human beings than can be found dwelling in any other square mile on the earth’s suiface. These people are said to be all Italians, speaking only their own lan- guage, and observing foreiga customs. It isa rather startling statement, and it is likely to attract fresh attention tothe great rush of italian immigration to the United States of late.

The House devoted this afternoon to the

discussion of the Northwest. bill reported from the Senate, and of which Hon, Mr. Dewdney moved the second reading. The bill was read a second time, and the House went into committee upon it.

Messrs. Charlton, Mills, Blake, O Brien, and others object to the new name the

| Sir Johu Macdonald said the Government ;could not at this late period of the session debate the whole constitution, and if the discussion was to be continued in fashion, withdraw the clauses debated, or perhaps withdraw the whole bill for the session.

The Committee shortly afterwards rose and reported progress.

FIRE IN MONTREAL.

GREAT LOSS OF LIFE.

Monrrear, May 6.

The greatest conflagration that has ever taken place in any one locality on the Is- land of Montreal occurred to-day at Longue Point, six miles from Montreal, where St. Jean de Dieu Lunatic Asylum, containing 1509 patients, in chargecf 70 Providence sisters, was burned tothe ground. All the men were saved, but from the closest cal- culations somewhere near 35 or 40 women perished in the flames. The building cost, with the ground, a million dollars. The fire started apparently in a cupboard in the top of the centre building, Drs. Bourque and Bacalet worked like heroes trying to save the unfortunates inside, and the nuns

helped them bravely, but like dumb cattle the poor demented creatures rushed towards the flames, which

seemed to have a_ terrible fascination for them. In half an hour all chance for saving those who were upstairs in the mid- dle portion was gone. Most of the men were gotten out, buta number of the wo- men, especially in the violent wards, had to be left to their fate, and an eye witness from the beginning says their cries were heartrending and made one’s hair rise. It is said with such fury did the fire rage that even at the beginning nothing could be done to save the building. The build- ing was insured for $300,000,

The Bonavisia’s Heavy Passage.

Hatrrax, May 7.

The Black Diamond steamer Bonavista, from Liverpool, at North Sydney, reports a severe passage. On the 27th ult. a heavy sea swept her decks, smashed her boats, stove her bulwarks, and did other damage, besides injuring the captain, chief officer, chief engineer, and a seaman.

The Indictment Dismissed.

New York, May 6. Judge Cowing to-day dismissed the in- d:ctment for bribary a gainst ex-Alderman James Pearson, of the boodle board of 1884. Pearson was never called for trial and no evidence had been brought against him. He had been on $40,000 bail.

Murder of Rev. Mr. Large. SOME FURTHER PARTICULARS.

A Kingston, Ont., despatch says: Stanley Chown, now missionary in Azabu, Japra, where Rev. Mr. Large was murdered, writes to his father here the first particulars of the murder : About midnight, he and Mr. Beale were aroused and saw that burglers had en- tered the gakko. Jwo masked men entered the back door of the institution, bound the night watchman and made him lead them to the safe, but not being able to open it, they went to Mr. and Mrs. Large’s room. While feeling around for the keys, they awaken- ed Mis. Large, who asked ‘* What is it?” They replied, ‘‘ We have __ business,” and then made a blow at Mrs. Large. She raised her right hand, when two of her fingers were broken and badly cut and her face bruis- ed. lIvstantly Mr. Large jumped out of bed and the robbers ran into the hall, where they turved on Mr. Large, who was unarmed. They cut him down with knives and wounded him in thirteen places. The noise awakened the Misses Hart, who went into the hali and saw Mrs. Large bending over the dead body of her husband. They picked him up and carried him into the room. It was three o'clock before a doctor cauld be secured. He ainputated two of Mrs. Large’s fingers and sew- ed up ber wounds,
