Senate Elections

Hello. .My name is Susan Arb- ing and I am running for the po- sition of Student Senator. I amin my third year at UPEI as an En- glish Honours student.

You might ask what exactly is Senate and why should you care who your student representatives are on the Senate. Well, the Sen- ate is one of the two governing

bodies here at UPEI. It is com- prised of the President, the Regis- tar, the Student Union President, eighteen elected faculty members and six elected student repre- sentatives. All academic policy is created, and , if necessary, amended by the Senate. There- fore, it is important to have effec- tive and accurate representation of student views.

I am interested and capable of providing this kind of representa- tion with the help of your sup- port. I have been and am in- volved in university affairs such as the Orientation Committee, the Senate Library Committee, the Debating Society, and Le Club Politique.

REPORT ON MEETING

The chief duty of the VP Communications is just what the title suggests — communicating with people, creating awareness & letting students know what is going on around campus. Thus, it seems fitting to publish a summary of what their Student Council is discussing and what decisions are being made on their behalf. And this is precisely what this article is about.

Before I let you in on one of the best secrets on campus, (what student councfl does), I would like to apoligize for not submit- ting the summary of the Septem- ber 11 SU Council meeting in the September 22 issue of The GEM. Wires got crossed regarding the minutes as a result The GEM deadline wasn’t met.

The second Student Coun- cil meeting was held on Sunday September 25 at 1:00pm in the Kelley Boardroom. The meeting was called to order shortly after

19 councilors were absent. The first note worthy topic of discus- sion concerned condom dispens- ing machines. The SU has de- cided to place condom dispensing machines in the male & female washrooms at the Barn. The rea- son for doing this was emphat- icly stated by-council as “to facil- itate AIDS awareness, health ed- ucation and to prevent sexually transmitted diseases.” It was also suggested that an AIDS program accompany the installation. As a result a Health Issues Committee was struck to report on the AIDS education program and to make recommendations for the impli- mentation of that program. They will report to council next meet- ing on their progress.

Dean MacMillan presented & explained the plans for the multi— million dollar Canada Games Field House. The loss of carrels was also discussed. Many coun- cilors reported that their consti- tutants were upset at the loss. It was concluded that the SU should try to get the service back, and a letter will be written to the head librarian. The draft pro- posal of a new university centre was presented to councilors (want to know more about this new and much improved Barn? Ask a councilor!!) These were the high- lights of the September 25 meet- ing. For more details, see the minutes located at the Desk in the Pit. The next meeting is Oc- tober 16 at 1:30. Remember ev- eryone is welcome to attend.

Board of Governors

Hello, my name is Roby Mac- Dougall and I am running for the position of the Board of Gover- nors student rep. I am a sec- ond year arts student, majoring in History.

Here at UPEI we have two governing bodies, the senate and the Board of Governors. The Board of Governors involves all fi- nancial aspects of the university, such as, tuition, buildings and funds. The Board of Governors has as its primary function, the creation of the university budget.

I am keenly involved in Stu- dent Union life. I am on the hiring and selection board of the Student Union. Also, I was a part of the very successful Frosh Week 88/89 Orientation Committee. I am the current promotions co— ordinator of the Student Union.

Fall Elections on Campus

The Annual October Elec- tions will be held Wednesday Oc- tober 12 and Thursday October 13.. With an advance poll Tues- day October 11th from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. The polls for Wednesday and Thursday open at 9:00am and close at 5:00pm.
