Old Smith had a lot to tell Charlie about Castleton ; he had such a good opinion of Charlie’s intimate friend, Dr. Meredith, that they spent a very pleasant halfsou: chattiog at the ball-room door, among 4 crowd of subs hanging about, upd not ips ¢ ined to venture on the wear and tear of a flirtation with the Valetta be.les.

Old Smith was suddenly pulled up iv the middle of a sentence by the recollec- tion of his wife, so he lead off Charlie to be presented. She h.d just been dancing, and the flush of exercise and a little excitement gave her an unwonted amount of the apimation she usually so much lacked.

Mrs. Hun, as she was ce lled for short by the wags, was very graci us—perhups her fascinating little tricks were rather overdone, but Theodosia soon looked froz- en up again. Her card was quite full, aod Captain Castleton could not by any possibility get a dance. So, when she was led away by her next partner, Charlie took the vacant seat, and submitted himself to be beamed upon by Mrs. Hun, who talked away to him about the leauties they had visited, of the discomforts of the Medi- terranean in geveral, and Malta in partic ular; while Chirlie did not pay much attention to ber talk, for he was being amused by a couple ia a quidriile o ar him—a very young ensigu of his own regi- ment, and a pretty girl of seventeen or 80, who evidently bad made up her mind to thoroughly evjoy her ball, and who looked eo amezed at the affectation of complete boredvess assumed by her partner, as he walked through his figures with the air of a martyr. She was a happy-looking little creature, who evidently could not conceive its being ‘ the thing ’ to have used up all the enjoyment in lite before eigh~ teen—the age of the callow cynic by her side.

Charlie was attending much more to this ill-matched couple than Mrs. Hun’s griev- uncer, aod he answered at random to oue or two of her questions aod remarks,

How Bessie did enjxy that next dance, when the ensiga gave her up and Charlie epue ber round the room at a pce hardly sui ed to the climate of M.lta. The rooms had got dreadfully hot, so they strolled through the ante-rooms, laughing and chat. ting, and being very pleasant to one an other.

Bessie was a nice frank little thing, with pretty brown hair, aod bright browo eyes, not the least like her stately si ter Theo- dusia either in appearance or mauoer, for she and Charlie were friends a:most at once, and quite cvunfidential ia a quarter of an hour.
