METHOD OF TREATING NEW LOW BACK PAIN

In cases of low buck pain due to injury——su1tngtng at a golf, ten- nis, or baseball and missing ft, lifting a weight. stepping down- ward when the ground was thought to be level. "The inner tube of a tire ls placed around the footboard of the bedstead at the level of the upper surface of the mattress. Tvro loops, about 8 tilt-hes in di- ameter and made of canvas tape or a trouser belt. encircle the in- ner tube perpendicular to its length (at right angles). The feet of the imtient are placed in the loops. so that the tape hooks above the ankles and across the upper part of the toes. The two loops are about l8 inches giant-t. The foot of the bed is raised and the patient pulls himself toward the head of the bed (now lower than the foot) sufficiently to apply ten- sion on the rubber inner tube. In this way the patients body weight opposes the pull of the inner tube. This position can be maintained for hours at t1 time without dis- comfort to the patient. It will usually be found necessary. for the patient to pull himself "down" to the head of the bed every once in a. while, as the inner tube pulls him up the other wnyf‘
