WHY THEY DON’T WANT ANY FISHERY COM MISSION—GLOUCESTER URGED TO BE UP AND DOING,

The work which has been accomplished in the past two years by the American fish bureau of this city and the American fishery union, in behalf of the fisheries, both on the coastand lukes, the statistics obtained and the able presentation ot the case through the columns of the press, has awakeued an ioter- est in the subject which his borne yood fruits. Now that a commission has been appointed and endeavors are being made to have the question setiled, there is urgent need that these efforts should be continued, and the fisheries be ably defended at Washington, be- fore the commission, It is a matier of mo- mentous issue, not only to the country at large, but to New England tishiog poris es- pecially, that the question shall be so adiudi- cated as to prevent any such harrassment to American fishermen while pu: suing their vo- cation as has disgraced the past two years, A free market in the United States is the end and aim of those who have the Canadian side of the question in charge. This means an in- jurious competition having for its object the crippling of the Americaimfisheries, and then will follow a monopoly, which will build up their fisheries at tiie expense of ou s,and prove a death blow toa very important American indus ry. This has been presented s ofien in these columns thatit is entirely unneces- sary to recapitulate, It is full time that our people were on the alert, and with others in- terested in the fisheries, preparing themselves to present the American side of the ease. We must depend upon ourselves ty meet this is ne, and it must be champion d by those who will use every effoit to win, We haye a subtle foe to contend with. English gold, uusparingly, and English influence will be brought to bear in every possibie manner for the accomplishment of tie desired ends, and able men on our side will be required to pre- sent the case before the commission when it meets. A weeting of the fishing owners in all the seaports aud Jake cities should be called, and there should be a unity of purpose ex- hibited and a zealousness wanifested which will convince congress that no commission is needed to settle the fishery question. We can get along without Canada in the fisheries, much better than she can get along without us, and the present year has done much to demonstrate the fact. Let us then be up and doing, by securing signers to petitions against any commissioners, and getting ready for any contingency, thus assuring congress that we are interested, and demanding of them a unity of action in our behalf.—Cloucesier Ad- vertizer.

The latter fact a certain Mrs. Harwick, cf Memphis, has found out to her cost. She, like the majority of ladies in this broad and happy land of ours, wore a bustle-—a really handsome bustle, if © such things can be ‘terned handsome by even the greatest stretch of the imagination. Within its deep and mysterious recesses she had sewed $7,000 in greenbacks, the savings of her honest husband. Somebody coveted the bustle, and the other night, while its owner slept, somebody took it. That bustle is now gone and in al! probability gone for- ever. The other bustles, sooner or later, must go, too, Yes! the fates decree it, the doctors desire it, the various Customs offi- cers sigh for it—yes, the bustle must go. one <nmmpnteaga amines Shot in the Legs.

On Saturday afternoon George T. and Lewis, sons of B. A. Smith, went across the North West Arm on a shooting expedi- tion. George is a young man in the busi ness with his father, Lewis is 16 years old. About half-past five o'clock when near Jones’ refinery an accident occurred by which the gun carried by Gecrge was dis- charged and the load of buckshot was lodged in the legs ot his brother, the calf of his right leg being very much shattered. George manayed to get him removed to the vesidence of Mrs. John Taylor, and medi- cal assistance was obtained. Yesterday afternoon the wounded youth was removed to the city and taken to his father’s resi- dence, where everything possible is being done to alleviate his sufferings.--Halifax
