The poor inehtiate returned home from the meeting, and in great agony ofmind asked himself. ‘ Am I in- deed so lost—is my case helpless!’ He called his son, a lad fourteen years ofage, and said, ‘hcre, my son, here arethe keys ofthe spirit cupboard, your father intends to give up the use of rum,andl charge you, as you respect my authority, never to give them to tne, should I plead ever so hard, or even command them.’ The son,with joy and hope for his poor- fathcr, promised. The father’s period oflonging came upon him—he went to his Son and begged for the keys—but he was kindly but firtnly refused, and re- minded ol' his resolutions. After some struggles of this kind, the victory was won—the habit was broken. The father has since been a sober man for several years,and for two years a humble disci- ple of the Lortl Jesus.

A TEMPERANCE STORY.

Two young tnen, ' with a humming in their hcntls,’ retired late at night to their rootn in a crowded inn, in which as they enter are revealed two beds, but the wind extinguishing the light, they both, instead of taking,“ they supposed, a bed apiece, get back to backinto one, which begins to sink under them and come around at intervals in a manner very circummnbient, butquite impossible of explication. The next remark was :

Being far too many for the size of the boat and being restless on account of the inﬂuence of the liquor, it upset and the whole party were pre- cipitated into the river. Seven, with some ditlicnlty. succeeded in reaching the banks but the other seven were drowned.

B. in our 2‘2d No. on behalf of the Poor, hoping that some of our friends who are, more conversant with the subject,5 would favour the public with a few suggestions, by which some plan may ‘ be effectually adopted for their re-, 'lief.—-We do not pretend to supply this deﬁciency, but it has occurred to us, that something can be done in order to bring the matter before: those, whose character and inﬂuence in stciety are sufﬁcient to insure that their benevolent exertions would be crowned with success.

The tnost inclement season of the year is rapidly approaching us, and , it should be remembered by those who enjoy the luxuries ofgood ﬁres, sump- ‘tuous food, and abundance of warm clothing, that it is not so with the ‘poor, but that their circumstances ldemand the charities of the afﬂuent, :as well as ofthose who have it in their ' power to bestow only one penny.
