Marking the Drills

For starting all plants which it isconvenlent to transplant into the garden (and which acrep: such treatment) the seed box is a useful device, even after the weather per- mits outdoor szwing.

One great- adyantaze of the box is that you knsw just when; your seeds are: and can move them about, inic the sun or shade as they may require. Outdoor seed boxes, kept in sunny, airy places, meet few of the difficulties which are common to indoor seed boxes. Damping off ‘a seldom encountered; spindiy plants are unknown and growth is more vigorous and rapid. An outdoor box started fiur weeks later than an in-

If the bix is put together with cracks between the boards no drain- age holes are necessary; but if tightly made. bore holes in the bot- tom to let excess wafer escape; and cover the holes with broken po.tcry, to prevent soil from escaping.

Sowing the Seed

Seeds in the outdoor box should be sown thinly so that it is not necessary to trans ianil the seed-

A good way seeds sown in drills is to put in the seed packet dry sand to

Pinning the Soil

After the seeds are sown. and covered with soil. the dirt should be firmed over them. The cbJect is 9-0 M1116 thcseed in close contact to separate them. ‘This contact is with the soil. without aLr pockets necessary to enable the rootlets when they develop, w gage up nourishment.

The next step is m soak the soil with water, without washing the se:d out. oi’ place. Until the seedlings de- velop roots which anchor the plants substantially, this method is rec. ommended.

The box should be watered daily. An outdoor box which is filled with 1°11‘!!! soil which lets excess water pass through freely can hardly be cverwstered. Seedling plants first develop a pair of what are known as “seed leaves." These are not really leaves, but lock like leaves. 'I'hey are followed by s pair oi brue leaves, and it is a. gsnersl rule that seedlings may be transplanted after the true leaves form.

In the outdoor seezl box, however, if the seeds have b;.".n sown thinly the seedling plants may be left without being disturbed until they are two or three inches high and have formed sturdy roots. They will reach ths size faster if they are no‘; subjected to the shock of transplanting to another box or

When the little plants are large enough, and their places in the garden have been prepared, carry the seed box directly to the place where they are to be set out. This will enable you to lift them from the box and set them in the gard- en soil wit-h the sbghtest possible disturbance of their roofs, and the least possible shock.
