Legislative Council Election.

Tue candidates supporting the Govern- ment are all now in the field.

For King’s County they are George Dingwell in the First District and William A. Poole in the Second District.

For Queen's County they are William Campbell in the First District and James Nicholson and James Ross in the Second District.

For Prince County they are Joremiah Blanchard in the First District and D. H. McDonald in the Second District.

These gentlemen have all been selected by delegates, at conventions duly called and held open and above board.

Judging by the spirit evinced at the con- ventions, composed as they were of leading and influential men drawn from all parts of the country, ‘he prospects of the Liberal- Conservative candidates are good.

We shall be greatly surprised if the sober second-thought of the country does not, in the Legislative Council election, assert it- self in favor of the present economical and honest Administration, as against the men (Liberals, indeed!) who wanted ,to keep this Province in subjection to the mort- gagee vote.

It is stated that one, at least, of the members of the C.,.uucil has been shouldered

out of the party candidature simply and only because he was amenable to reason and voted to restore to mortgagors the political influence of which they had been deprived by mortgagees. We shall now see whether or not the country is in accord with the governing clique of the Grit party.

The Supreme Court opened at George- town yesterday, Mr. Justice Hensley on the Bench.

The case of Alexander Morrison against Alexander McRae, an absent debtor, was heard yesterday, whensa verdict was given for the plaintiff for $431. W. S. Stewart for plaintiff.

The case of James Young vs. the Glasgow and London Insurance Company, an action on an insurance policy, began to-day, and will hkely not be concluded before the end of the week. Peters and Morson for plain- tif! ; Davies, Q. C., and Currie, of St. John, for defendants.

Monday's Fishery Reports.

The Halifax Fishery Bureau's reports for the 14th are as follows: Mackerel fishing to-day has been very good at Charlottetown, P. E. 1 , where some boats had 2,000 each, and at Lower East Pubnico. Some schools were seen of Summerside harbor, P. E. I., Close Island, and Meat Cove, C. B. There is plenty of cod at Meat Cove and Pubnico The latter place reports last week’s catch at 100 to 150 quintals per vesse!. Squid are schooling in abundance about Margaree and Ingonish, but none have beer caught yet. \ few herring have been caught at White Head and St. Peters, the average catch be- ing over 200 per boat. Herring mixed with mackerel reported schooling at Summerside harbor yesterday. At Port LaTour the only fishing done was pollock, which aver-

Mr. A. E. Suvrrteworts, who has sie appointed to the Department of Agriculture in the Prince of Wales College, arrived in Charlottetown on Tuesday evening. The new incumbent of the place so worthily held by Mr. LePage is a graduate | of Guelph Agricultural College and of Mc- Gill University. He has been an instructor at Guelph, and was for some time engaged by the Ontario Governmnnt, organizing Farmers’ Institutes and laying before them such iuformation az would have a direct}

bearing on their work. Mr. Shuttleworth | has, we believe, a practical acquaintance | with ail farming operations, and his ap- pointment must prove to be of great service to the Province.

No Cause for Alarm.

Tue fact that Lord Salisbury’s foreign policy is essentially pacific has been made apparent over and over again. There is, therefore, no ground for ascare in the States because the Pacific squadron has been ordered to rendezvous at Esquimault. Only let the States refrain from seizing British vessels upon the high seas and they will stand in no danger of war with Great Britain.

+Oore Obituary.

Many friends, in this Province aud elsewhere, will deeply regret the death, which is announced to-day of Mrs. Welsh, wife of Wiiliam Welsh, Esq.,M. P. The deceased was a very estimable lady. Mr. Welsh has the sympathy of the community at this time of his bereavement and sorrow.

We »nnounce to-day the death of Mr. John Dickinson who, for about ten years, served his country with credit as a soldier in the Fourth Regiment. Mr. Dickinson's iliness was long and painful. We sym- pathize with his bereaved wife and children.

Dog Bites.

The Pasteur treatment for bydrophobia has in Dr. Gibier, a pupil of Pasteur, an admir- able representative in New York. We under- stand that his infirmary is crowded with pa- tien's, and the atteation thus called to the subject of dog bites may be turned to great public service, if it should tend te correct the old and general superstition thata dog which bites a human being should be iastantly kill- ed. The truth is that he is the very dog that shovld not bez killed until it is ascertained whether he is mad or not, and that fact de- termines itself in the course of three or four days, in which time, if mad, the dog will die. If he does not die, the victim is relieved of ap- ys ay of hydrophobia, and the dog may

killed or not as may seem best.

It is a yery common belief that if a biting dog runsm#d atany subsequent time, the victim that he bas bitten will then be seized with hydrophobia. This is the merest super- stition. When a dog bites a human being the important fact to ascertain is his madness, and that is made possible if the dog is killed. A phvsician writes to the J'’ribune, wisely re- ma: king that to the bitten person the dog’s lite is invaluable.

Generally speaking, the bite of a dog is dangerous only as all such wounds are, but not as producing hydrophobia. CARRIER Piagons.—The Halitax Chronicle says: ‘I'wenty-four pure bred carrier pigeons, from Antwerp, are quartered at the marine and fisheries wharf, Halifax, in apartments fitted up according to plans furnished of pigeon homes in Antwerp. The birds are for use between here and Sable Island in case of shipwrecks.

ined Marine Crops.—The Lewiston Jowrna/ has made a canvss of Maine as to the crop pos- pects snd the following is the summary : Hay will be above the average crop, though one week later. The area of corn planted is about 77 per cent. of the average. Potatees rate higher than corn, say 80 per cent. Oats and bariey are about the average, but indications point to the determination that these crops are rusting. The apple crop, on the whole, taking into account the failure of the Baldwin crop, will fall below the average.

Leprosy at Anticost1.—It has been learn- ed from reliable authority that a geuuiue case of leprosy has been discovered on the Island of Anticosti. Some time ago an Acadian family came to reside at English Bay, on the south coast and the father recently died of leprosy. The case is most serious, as the fami'y is large, several of the girls being of a marriage- ableage. Rev. Mr. Thiboutot, missionary at Anticosti, has made a report to the govern- ment on the subject, and Mr. Pope, guardian of South Point lighthouse, who is at present in Ottawa, will also draw the attention of the authorities to the matter.
