It is stated on good authority that Henry George's friends have subscribed $15,000 for the establishment of an evening paper to be called the Evening Standard. It will make its appearance on Sept. 15.

A new steam omnibus is in use in Dres- den. The motive power is applied in the hind wheels, and is supplied by an upright coiler and compound engine. It is used in the streets for carrying passengers, and will seat twenty.

A lady in Birmingham wrote to a lady friend in Montgomery to come up andspend a week with her. Among the other induce- ments held out she offered this: ‘‘You can sit at my front window and see several funerals go by every day.”

The secretaries of General Ferron, French Minister of War, have been arrested for disciosing to the Paris Figaro, the plan for carrying out the mobilizing scheme, and thus allowing publication contrary to the government's wishes. The charge against them is high treason.

Mr. Handley G. Gerter, of Evergreen, East Margaretsville, N. S., died rather suddenly on Wednesday, 24th inst. He ate quite a hearty dinner, after which he complained of a distressed feeling. His sufferings increased during the afternoon, till towards night when he died. Deceased was in the 92nd year of his age.

The late Marshal Pelisser once struck his aide-de-camp in one of those fits of uncon- trollable rage for which he is notorious. The officer took out his pistol, pointed it at Pelisser and pressed the trigger. It did not go off. ‘* A fortnight’s arrest,” calmly said Pelisser. ‘* That will teach you not to keep your arms in such bad order.”

Robert Bonner drove Maud §S. last Saturday afternoon, the three-quarter mile track on his farm at Tarrytown, the fastest time that has ever been made to wagon. The first half was made in 1.08} and the last half in 1.043. making the mile in 2.13}, On the last half when she made the mar- vellous time of 1.04? to a wagon to a three- quarter track.

There exists in Italy no law preventing

the marriage of a royal personage with a subject. The late ex-Queen of Spain was

a Princess de la Cisterina, and now her son Prince Victor of Saxony, is to marry the daughter of the very rich Count Sprietri of Bologna, the King and the Duke of Absta having asked her hand of the father during the recent royal Visit to Reggio.

There are now cables on almost every sea and ocean bed, the total length of wire aid being nearly 113,000 nautical miles. There are nine cables connecting Europe with America, the first that was laid dating from 1858. So great, also, has the advance been in the operative aspect of cable telegraphy that practically no more difficulty is felt in repairing submarine lines than in attending to defects in those on land.

In 1881, an inn-keeper named Zettinck, of Brezina, Bohemia, was sentenced to ser- vitude for life foran alleged attempt to poison his wife with arsenic. The sentence was afterwards commuted to 16 years im- prisonment. The wife emigrated to America. Recently she swore out an affi- davit before the Austrian Consul, stating that she poisoned her own food and then accused her husband, her motive being jealousy. Zettinck has just been retired and discharged.

The slaughter of the Utes by Colorado volunteers seems to be on a par with most of the Indian wars on that frontier,in which the stronger race bullies the weaker. The quarre), according to report, was got up by white treachery. White men having bet their horses in a race, refused to give them up when the race was lost and the Indians very boldly took them. For the defence of these racecourse blacklegs and their hired horses,a bloodly battle has been fought,and a sense of wrong,left in the hearts of the Indians to rankle for generations.

A very singular incident was noted in connection with a recent mill fire at Oarle- ton, Mich. The building was burning fiercely, but the big engine which drove the machinery continued to run all through the blaze, and by that means was saved from destruction, though there was not a wall standing on auy side of it when the fire had finished. The pumps were also running, and kept the boiler supplied, so there could be no explosion. It was a peculiar spectacle to see the engine driving away at a slashing speed in the midst of the flames, but the motion somehow saved it from the fire. All the rest of the machinery was a total loss. This is almost ground for argu- ing that machinery has sagavity, like horses
