President Eisenhower and Sec rotary of State Dulles and various other Western leaders have intimat- ed from time to time that they ex- pect an ultimate rupture between Communist China and the Soviet Union. This hope is based on the assumption that neither of these

countries looks with favour on the‘
strength of the other.
It is presumed that the Soviet Union would be averse to China’s becoming a dominating power in Asia, because that would diminish its own influence in Asian political and ecomomic affairs. By the same token, it is thought that China, whose population is three times that of the Soviet Uniono would like to bring all Asia under its sphere of influence. It has even been suggest- ed that Mao Tse-Tung imagines that he is a better Communist leader than Khrushchev.
This sounds reasonable enough; but whether it is, intact, a practical consideration on which to base any part of the West’s foreign 'policy is open to grave doubt. Mr. Adlai Stevenson, titular head of the De- mocratic Party in the U.S.A., who recently toured a large part of the
Soviet Union and held discussions-
with several of its leaders, thinks it is wishful thinking and nothing more. “The Soviet Union/Che said the other day in a speech before the Daily Press Association in Chicago,
“may be and probably-is concerned I
about the growth of its Communist partner, but nothing I saw or heard in the Soviet Union indicated any crack in solidarity.” Why should there be? .When it comes. to
cruelty and ruthlessness, there is. little to choose between Soviet and,
Chinese leaders. Treachery would bother them not all—if it paid. But the record does not show them to be lacking in political foresight; and
lts‘seems highly unlikely that they.
would risk their dreams of world conquest—either by military or economic aggression—~by fighting among themselves.
Mr. Stevenson thinks, too, that "hope should be mixed ‘with cau-
tion in expecting eruption in Soviet .
bloc states.” No doubt, there are many peeple in Eastern Europe, millions of them, who would like nothing better than to rise against their oppressors. But what chance would they have in succeeding in Itch a risky venture? None at all, as far as can be seen; and the ex- perience of Hungary—which, in ef— fect, was betrayed by the West when it tried valiantly to throw off the foreign yoke—is not likely to strengthen their will to revolt.

In these days ‘of advanced tech- nology it seems hardly credible that experts would bother to spend any time in developing a wooden wash- ing machine that is operated by hand. Such is the case however. At the Agricultural Research Centre in Beltsville, Maryland, specialists have turned out a machine which, they say, has the following advantages: (1) Inexpensive to build. About 30 pieces of moderately firm soft wood fill the bill. Some nails, bolts, screws and pieces of sheet metal are need— ed. Produced in quantity, the cost per unit would run about $3. (2) Easy to make. A tape measure, hat- chet, saw. wood chisel, screw driver, wrench and drill make up the neces- sary tools. No fine knowledge of carpentry is necessary. (3) Easy to use. To keep the washer simple, the clothes stay in more or less a stat- ionary position while the water is fOT‘Ced back and forth through the clothes by the piston action of the plungcrs. One ventures to say that. there are places even in Canada where the new machine would come in handy.
Soviet Commentary
Since the Russian leaders have no respectlfor religion or any of its institutions, one would imagine that they would not have the slightest interest in the election of a new Pope. But they do, strangely. The Moscow Radio, which says only 'what the Government wants it to
say, declared a few evenings ago that “the late Pope meddled in politics and so had destroyed the
principle of the Church’s mission in the world.” Fancy that! would almost think that Mr. Khrush- chev and his athiest colleagues re- cognized the Church’s “mission”.
The broadcast went on to say that “the hope is that the new Pope may interest him-self more in re- ligious problems and less in political problems.” If the Russians really be- lieve, as they say they do, that all religion is myth, how can they bring themselves to talk about religious “problems”?
What all this means, of course, is that the Soviet leaders are hope ing that a Pope sympathetic to Com— munism, or at least not as strongly opposed to it as was the late Pius XII, will be elected. There is a com1—' cal twist to that, too. No one but a fool could imagine a Cardinal being favourable to atheistic Communism. The only serious thing about the broadcast is the inference that the Soviet leaders recognize in . Papacy' a strong opponent of their evil ambitions. In this, of course, they are correct.

TRIBUTE TO MR. GALLANT
Sir—I was very sorry to learn of the dearth of my friend and former colleague in the provin— cial cabinet. the Honourable Marin Gallant. ‘
In January 1936, when I was called upon to form a Govern- ment, I gladly included the Hon- ourable Mr. Gallant, who had already served for five months in the Cabinet of tlhe late Pre- mier Lea. For almost eight years I had the privilege of being associated with him as a member of the Government and of the Legislature.
“Manang”, as he was affec- tionately known, endeared him- self to all his colleagues by his quiet and congenial disposition. He competently represented the Acadian population of the Island and his considered opinions on matters of public importance were held in high esteem.
The late Mr. Gallant will be
greatly missed by his many l'e~‘
latives and friends throughout the Province.

Sin-«It was a pleasant sur- prise to have a recent visit from a near relative and close friend .of many years. Hon. J.A. Ber- nard. of Tignish. Mr. Bernard is visiting his daughter Mrs. Eric C. Lotli and Dr. Loth in West Roxbury and is not exactly a stranger in the “Hub”. where some'fifty years ago he was em- ployed as Conductor on the sur- face lines of the Boston Eleva— ted Railway. and during his term of office as Lieutenant Gover- not of P.E. Island he paid Bos— t-on _a number of visits and was always warme greeted by his many friends.
Mr. Bernard told us that he was deeply interested in the Rural Beautification now being car- ried on in P.E.I. and all of us agree that it is a wonderful idea. We hope other communities in the Maritimes will follow suit.
Our most cherished wish and hope is that. we will be able to visit Mr. Bernard and picturesque Prince Edward. Island in the not too distant future.

My son heard the name of Mrs. Crane. of Margale. P.E.l. men- tioned on a radio quiz some time ago. and, as we came from Mar. gate. England. to Canada, was interested enough to write to her. In her reply, she said that the place was certainly named for the English Margate. by some settlers from there about I70 years ago, but she did not think that there were any descendants there now.
In 1956, my husband and I visited your Island. and spent a very enjoyable three days there, touring around. and. of course. going to see Mrs. Crane and Mar- gale. I wrote an account of this trip. sent it to the local pap- er of our late home town. and it. was published. with some pic~ turcs that we had taken.
A lot of Interest was shown. We had letters from people who had read it. and among these. was a letter from the ’idow of a man who was a dcsccndanl of onc of

When the famous admiral was killed at the battle of Trafalgar. his body was placed in the lar- gest rum cask available on the ship—a cask called a “Leaguer” I know not why-and the cask was then filled with alcohol to pre- serve the body for the five-«weak homeward voyage. T-he alcholdl used was a nlxtlure of two- thirds brandy and one-third spirit of wine. but as the container had originally been arum cask. and not a brandy cask, the sailors assumed wrongly that rum had been used. Hence in the Navy arose the slang term for the ra- tion of rum which was, hande out to the sailors.
Thanks to Bus for this inter- esting explanation of the old term. He received it, he says, from a very authoritative source: the Librarian of the British Adv miralty.

Some persons. howover. become anxious and tense over every lit- tle tlhingFor them. life is just one crisis after math and such persons are ripe for prolonged emotional upsets.
How can you tell when anxiety and tension are becoming in. tense, when there is danger of real trouble?
EIGHT TEST QUESTIONS

Wlhen emotional upsets become frequent and persist, that‘s the time to ask these questions.
I. Do minor problems and dis- mpoin-tments throw you into a dither?
2. Do you find it. difficult to get along with people, and do peoote have trouble getting along with you? .
3. Do the small pleasures. of life fail to satisfy you?

5. Do you fear people or situa- tions that never used to trouble you? ‘

If your answer is yes to a com siderable number of these ques» tions. it probably m that dis~ ester is staring you in the face and it also means that you should take some action.
Best advice I can gill/e you is to see your doctor and ask his help in straightening out your troubles. But there are also sev- eral tlilngts you can do to help yourself.
For one thing, don't expect. por- fection either in yourself or oth- ers. Don‘t bottle up your troub- les; talk linings out. And don't In- sist that you are always right. Even if you are, give in occas tonally.
