Cubans Meet With Reverses — Feeling Against the United States.

Havana, March 30—Col. Molina re ports the capture of a rebel camp at Gua - imal, near Corral Felso, province of Mat- aozas. The troops attacked the camp with machetes and the rebels fled, leaving 55 dead. Many were wounde!, which they carried away with them. The peo- ple in the vicinity say many other bodies arestrewn around the camp. The gov- ernment denies the rumors of the atiack upon and capture of the city of Pivar del Rio by rebels under Maceo.

A military strong line has been estab- lished from Majano, on the south coast, to Muriel, on the north coast, extending across the narrowest part of the island. The line sega a es the provinces of Havana and Pinar del Rio. Gen, Aro'’as is in command and reports daily ekirmishes with parties of rebels who attempt to cross. Maceo, according to military re- ports, is now penned in the province of Pinar del Rio. Aon official report states that rebel parties under Pepe Roque, of Janco Morajon, have been defeated at Sabsnna_ Barrito with a loss of 15 killed. One rebel was captured. Loxpox, March 30.—The Standard pub- lishes a despatch from Madrid saying that even the most moderate papers in their issues on Friday expressed great indigna- tion at the action of the American Con grees anent the beliigerency of the Cuban insurgents, and asked the government to spare no efforts to prepare for any develor+ ments. The action of Captain General Weyler in deciding to treat the insurgents as bandits is almost unanimously approv- ed. The despatch adds that public feeling is running so high that the government will find difficulty in controlling the na- tional exasperation. Republicans advo- cate the granting of autonomy to Cuba, and declare they will, with a view to avoid ng responsibility, abstain from tak- ing part in the elections for members of the cortes.

The state of affairs in Corea goes from bad to worse. Politicians in Seou! insist that in taking refuge in the Russian lega- tion and remaining there the king has virtually quitted his own domains.

Mapeip, March 30.—EI Liberal to-day prints an article ascribed to Senor Valers, formerly Spanish Minister at Washing- ton, urging, iv view of the attitude of the United States, which, he says, apparently, aims at imposing on Spain a heavy and shameful yoke, that Spain should enter into an alliance with France, Great Brit- ain and Holland respecting colonial af- fairs. He argues that these powers would willingly conclude treaties with Spain on the subject.

The other reform prisoners, says the despatch, are under guard here. The British government bas intimated that it will hold President Kru- ger and the executive responsible for their safety. A despatch from Cape Town to the Times further announces that Mr. Hammond has arrived there.

Wesron, W., Va., March 30—A_ fire started in the Commercial hotel here last night and burned itself out shortly after daylight yesterday, having destroyed nearly the entire business portion of the town. A large number of small build- ings were destroyed. The loss is variously estimated at $400,000 to $600,000, about 25 per cent, of which is covered by insur- ance, The state asylum for the insaue was at no time in serious danger, but’ the unfortunate inmates were rendered frantic by the fire and many may die from over excitement.

Paris, March 30.—It was rumored last evening that the reserre squadrons at Toulon, Brest, Lorient and Cherbourg had been ordered to hold themselves in readi- ness to be placed on a war footing. Later it was semi-officially announced that the active equadron at Toulon had received orders for one of the cruisers to keep steam up. It was also rumored that France, under the coaching of Russia, will convene an international conference to seitle the question of the powers of the Egyptian debt commission and the evacua- tion of Egypt. The rumor cannot be con- firmed.

It is said that while no settlement nas been reached yet they bring back conciliatory proposals from the Manitoba Government. The French Lib- crals are in despair. While appreciating, however, the patriotic motive which inspired the offer, General Gascoigne cannot recommend its accept- ance. He holds that it is somewhat in- consistent at a time when the Government contemplates the expenditure of a large sum Of money on the defences to permit one of our finest regiments to leave the country. Colonel Domville and his men therefore, will have to stay at home.
