The Globe and Hail cites the reports of the Auditor-General of Canada as indicating C0il- tiiiued increase in travelling expenses of gov- eriinieiit officials, costs of government motor cars, etc, at Ottawa In the last five years alone, it is pointed out, the aggregate of travelling ex- pense accounts of ministers, deputy ministers and officials of departments has climbed from $2,676,386 to $3,855,592. These expenditures do not include free transportation costs on railways or the upkeep of the official railway cars.

Examples: A car is maintained for the Prime Minister, another for the Minister of Trans- port, a third for the biiriistcr of National De- fcnse and a fourtli—tlie “tramp car" —for any other minister who choose to use it. The total maintenance cost of these in I938 was $51,080.

The Department of Agriculture headed the list for travellers in i938. It put up a bill of $i,- (1)9341.

The Department of National Defense ran up o bill of $591,647.

The Public Works Department, with com- parativcly sliiall staff, tiiriicd in expense ac- counts totalling $l28,90l.

Serious Farm Handicaps

A thoughtful letter on the agricultural situ- ation in New Brunswick is contributed by Mr. C. A. Anderson, Woodstock, to the Saint John Telegraph Journal. Many of Mr. Anderson's points have application t0 the Maritimes as a whole, and more particularly to this Island where agriculture is the main industry.

Our farmers, Mr. Anderson writes, take strong exception to tlie steadily increasing ex- ports of butter from other countries, these im- portations being forty-three times as great in i938 as in i937. On top of that, upwards of i4,- ooo,ooo gallons or some i5o,o0o,ooo pounds of vegetable oils were imported into Canada dur- ‘ing i938 which he states, were in a large measure responsible for the greatly depressed butter‘ prices at the present time. His plan is to organize corporations. The six-man govern- ing commission of Newfoundland then would loan money to fishermen enabling them to go to sea and tlie corporations would sell the fisli through their own merchants.
