Cultivation of Small Frniis.

The most lucious of all the fruits of the earth. The most savory product of the soul. The most palatable of all berries and one of the most easily cultivated. *‘Ambro- sial nectar,” according to mythology, was the special foed of the gods. What ambro- sial nectar was we do pot know, but if it wasas rich and palatable aa ripe straw- berries served up with good eich cream and Redpath’s No. 1 sugar, the gods must have been delighted with their fare.

Years ago when the writer was a little urchin running barefoot to the schoolhouse down by the mii] wild strawberries were qui e plentiful and cheap. There was ve ditiiculty in procuring all that was wanted, both for present useand also for preserving It makes our mouths water yet when our minds revert back to the great number o/ crocks of that luscious berry which our mothers had stored away in the cellar for winter use and to which some of us small boya used to gain access clandestinely.

But this is al} changed now. The wild strawherry has almost become a thing of the past. Since the country has become cleared, and since that great enemy of the wild strawberry, mussel mud, has been distributed over the land, the strawberry has bad to give plece to the clover, the timothy or some other plant that that utilitarian animal man ecnsiders of more importance. Thus have we been deprived of one of the dainties which @ beneficent Providence had placed within the resca of rich and poor alike. Well, we sup- poss it is for the best, looking at it from the stand point of the progressive farmer, as you know that strawberries, nice os they are, are not very good food for the production of milk or beef. But I tell you it knocks a lot of the poetry out of the lives of the boys and giris on the farm, not to be able to go to the strawberry stumps now and again for a feast, er perhaps what was better, to enjoy at the tea table a nice bowl of the berry preparéd in mother’s best style.

Bat it cannot be they have passed away, and the cultivated kind must take their place. As we said m_ the first of this article, this berry is very easily cultivated. By setting apart a small piece of the farm for a strawberry bed we can easily produce all we want for home consumption. We can produce more strawberries on a twen- tieth of an acre of ground than would satisfy the wants of any family; yes or, if we make it do its best, it would satisfy several families, even if they were all gourmands in that line like myself. How very few strawberries are cultivated on the Island’ The great majors ity of farmera do not cultivate amy, A visit to Charlottetown market house during the early part of July last year would give an idea of how this business was neglected. 1 saw strawberries selling there at that time for 25 \eents per quart. Those were the first that had ;come in, and later on, in the middie «4 the season, they sold for 18 cents, and the supply was not up to the demand by a long sight. The few who are making a business of cultive ating them are making big money et those figures, aud could make money at half such

The strawberry season in America is quite a lengthy one, beginning down south in Florida in the latter part of March or April and end- ing upin P, K. Island im the latter part of July. Gs the 16th ult. the members of the above named Institute discussed a very important subject, viz., ‘Which produsea the greater heroes, France or Seotiand? Mr, J. Osin opeved the debate in favor of France, and very ably pictured the military genius of the little Cersican officer, at whose name the powers of Europe trembled and before whose musketry the enemy oft hid fled. Mr J. B McDonald, a true son of the heather, respond- ed and forcibly impressed on the chairman the exploits of Wallace aud Bruce and the uopar- alleied heroism displayed by them in their re- spective engagements.

Several others participated in the discus- sion, and at the conclusion a decision was given by the chairman, Jamee McKay, Esq, in favor of Scotiand.

The farmers of this vicinity intend to petition the Legislature for a grant of money to repair the wharf at Gillis’ Point, in order to improve the facilities for ship- ping produce there, and also to make it available as a stopping place for theJacyues Cartier on her way to and from Charlotte- tewn. It is to be hoped that the leader of the Government—the representative of the petitioners—may be enabled to grant the prayer of the petition without endangering the fisancial affairs of the Province. Another matter which interests the farmers of this section at present is the establishment of a cheese factory at Mount Stewart. All, or nearly all of them, have agreed to become to a more or less extent, sbareholders, aud to supply as much milk as their means will allow.
