Shortly before one o'clock, on Saturday morning, Mr. John Cohalan, iving on Main street, Portland, after having retired to hia bed, was alarmed by the cries of & human being. The cries appeared to come from a distance. A great storm prevailed at the time —thunder, lightning and rain. Mr. Cohalan and his son, John, immedi- ately started out. Rushing down Main street, Portland, they became satisfied that the cries were froin some part of the city. Reaching North street they had no doubt that the person needing assistance was somewhere in the vicinity of Gerows wharf. Arriving at the latter place they saw the form of aman in the mud below The party was too much exhausted to tell what had happened. Messrs. Cohalan were soon joined by Michael Collins, and Policeman Currie put in an appearance shortly afterwards. A rope was procured and a portion of it was fastened around the body of the ian below. ‘The tide was out latter must have perished before assistance could have him. As quickly as possible he was hotsted up to the wharf and removed to Mr, Joseph Tole’s house, on North street. A messen- ger was dispatched for a medical mau and at a quarter past twe Dr. James Christie arvived. He found the man, mid- die-aged, name unknown, in a very ex-{ hausted condition. He advised that seme | stimulant be procured without delay. In auswer te loud knocks by a Paily News’ representative, Mr. John Walsh, of Mull street, got out of bed, and furnished some whiskey for the exhausted man, who, after taking the liquor appeared te revive some- what. Dr. Christie then ordered his re- moval to the Public Hospital.

This order was carried out about three oclock this morning, the unfortunate man | being conveyed to that institution by Mr. John Doherty's team.

Mr. Colalau and son deserve every credit for leaving their house in such a storm and going to the assistance of the man. Had they not gone he would likely have died from starvation. Even after his rescue he would have died but for their efforts to keep his body warm. Mra. Tole rendered valuable assistance after the man had been breught to her house.

At 3,30 o'clock this morning a represen- ative of the Daily Neves visited the Public Hospital. He found that man had recovered sufticienily to tell his name and to give an account of hew the accident had occurred. He said his name was Wil- liam Dunean; that he belonged te Char- lottetown, P. i. 1.; that he is now in the employ of the Grand Southern Railway and residing at Fairville: that sven after midnight, while he was at York Point Slip, & sailor belonging to a schooner lying at tailway wharf approaciied him and asked for twenty-five cents; that he refused to give him the money, whereupen the sailor pushed him over the wharf, adding, ‘‘D—n your soxl.” Hedoes not Know the sailor's name, but thinks he could recognize him if

Freezer. THe St. Jolin Suu publishes an account of the North Poie Refrigerator and Freezer, which was recently invented by Messrs. Clark & Lockerby, (both young men for. merly belonging to this city) The Sux says :-—Messrs. Clark & Lockerby, Germain Street, are now manufacturing extensively a new and improved style of refrigerator which bids fair to rival all others and be- come the most popular and useful article of its kind now in use in the household or store. These refrigerators are convenient, and can be made to any size to order. The household style is divided into two large compartments, one for the purpose of keep- ing perishable articles of food, and the other containing an ice-box and a freezer, the freezer being charged from thetup. Th» larger styles of refrigerators and freezers are intended for the use of hotels and stores where a large quantity of stuff is to be kept cool. These have three compartments and can be made to order toany size. There are three regular sizes of refrigerators for houses, those for hotels, ete., being of special make. a Messrs. Clark & Lockerby commenced the manufacture.of their North Pole Re- irigerator and Freezer about the first of March last, and have been kept very busy since. During the time that has elapsed they have made and sent out about fifty refrigerators, and wherever they have been

Over the freezing box is an opening in the top of the refrigerator, into which the ice, mixed with a small proportion of salt is Introduced, and lies on and around the freezing box. Under the freezing box is the ice box. Mr. Clark put the freezing apparatus to work while our reporter was visiting his warerooms yesterday, aud in hardly half a minute's time, quite a thick shell‘of ice had formed on the top of the freezing box on the inside, where it had “ sweated,” or the water hac collected in drops from condensation. It could then be removed in pieces with a knife.
