Tue Crvizexs’ Basp.—The benefit for the * Citizens’ Band, given in the Lyceum last evening by the Kickapoo Indian Medicine Company, was very successful. The Lyceum wasthronged. The selections by the band added very materially to the enjoyment of the oceasion. About $70 was taken for tickets at the door and a goodly number of tickets was disposed of by the members of the band pre- vious to the concert.

Tne Monrn's Recoro.—At the Police Court during the month of November end- ing yesterday, there were 22 convictions for drunkeness against 26 for the preceding | month; 2 convictions fur malicious injuries + + to property; 6 convictions for breach of the

‘Liqucr Regulaticn Act; and 1 conviction for larceny. During the same period there was one dismissal for breach of the Liquor Regulation Act, 2 for assault and 2 for nuisance. The receipts for the month jamounted to $197 51.

ENTERTAINMENT.—It ia announced that there will be a musical and literary entertain- ment in St Patrick’s Hall next Tuesday ever- ing. The entertainment will be under the auspices of the Boy’s Branch f the League of the Cross, and the proceeds will be used to defray the expenses of the rooms re- cently opened for the benefit of its members. Let there be a good house.

APpPporINTMENT.— Priucipal Miller, of the Charlottetown Business College, has been appointed to teach elementary book keep- ing to second-class student-teachers at- tending Prince of Wales College. He is to give at least four hours instruction every week. Theappointment is en excellent one, and cannot fail to prove a great bene- fit to the students attending the College.

Brussets, Novy. 28.—Baron. Rothschild laid his proposals before the Monetary con- ference to-day. The document states that a gold standard is only possible on the basis provided by the Monetary system of England; bi-metalism is impossible, silver being unsuitable as a means to settling balance between nations.

**I do not think that a universal agrete ment respecting the currency in . question can be had at the present time, for no two nations are on a similar footing regarding the national wealth.

‘*Supposing the American government cor- tinues in the purchase of silver to the extent of fortyefive million ounces per annum, I would suggest the different European powers combine, making yearly purchases of five miliion sterling silver. They should do this for the period of five years, paying a fixed price for the commodity of 43 pence per ounce. As soon as the standard price of silver should rise above 43 pence, purchases should be sus- pended until a new price is agreed upon by the powers involved in the scheme,

‘I hope and believe that our American friends will find this proposition acceptable, for my own part [ have no objection to silver being made the legal tender of England up to five pounds sterling, instead of two pounds sterling as is the case at the present time. In case of this arranegment being “perfected the gold market would be relieved as no fresh demand for gold would be forthcoming. After the proposition of the baron was read a motion to appoint a committee to examine into the suggestion was unanimously approved.”

Car Floor Red With Blood. BATTLE ON A NORTHBOUND @HIO RIVER RAIL ROAD TRAIN.

News of a bloody battle on a northbound Ohio River railroad has reached Gallipolis, Ohio. Asa result of the fight the covductor and brakeman are shot and badly cut, a nume ber of passengers are more or less injured and the six drunken offenders, it is supposed, have injuries which are dangerous

On Monday night six brothers, Williams by name, boarded the train at Huntingdon in a maudlin condition. They at once became obstreperous, and \ hen Glenwood was reached one «f them went into the ladies’ coach, began using profane language and flourishing hie revolver in a menacing manpey and threatened to kill everyone in the cary

C.nductor Smith grabbed the man and pull. ed him into the smoker. This angered his brothers and they rushed npon the conductor, at the same time drawing their pistols and knives. ,

His brakeman at once came to his assistance and the fight was precipitated. Inthe melee both the conductor and brakeman sustained serious injuries.

The newsboy, hearing the shots and screams, jumped from his seat in the ladies’ coach and rang the ‘‘riot” bell. The train was stopped and the engineer and fireman dis- mounted from their cab and preceeded to the smoker with huge clubs, where they beat the Wil‘iams brothers until they were almost in sensible, and threw them off the train.

Several passengers were badly injured, and the floor of the smoker was red with blood. It is not known whether any of the Williams boys were killed or hot,
