Dear Sir: As a member of the
.church "that makes the most fuss" about abor-
tion, I wish to clear up a few statements made in November 5's article on abortion. I have alwavs been
taught by the Church that life begins at
the moment of concep- tion and that, in the event of a child's mis- carrying, that he or she should be baptized.
:As for funerals, it is
quite true that we to not have funerals for miscarriages, but I re— ‘eall that when my baby sister (three months old) died we had no funeral but simply a Mass of the Angels. Since such a small child is incapable of reason, a funeral would have been meaningless.
I agree with the au- thor that illegal abor- tions and the law that makes women seek them out, are both abomina- ble. However, the re- sults of a legal abor- tion are not always as rosy as he paints them. Very frequently there are complicatibns re- sulting, sometines in sterility.
As for a woman's having the right to de- cide whether or not she should bear a child, I cannot accept that any- more than I could ac- .cepts anyone's having the power of life and death over any segment of the population.
