The Canadian consum- er was therefore, Mr. Profit said, much better off today so far as his consisrnpfdon of butter was corn- cerned than the consumer in the United States where tihe sale and manufacture oi’ oleomargarine was allowed.

Moreover, the Dominion Govern- ment was now subsidizing the im- portation of foreign oils for the manufacture of vegetable shorten- ing. It would be unreasonable to‘. suppose that the Government‘, would continue such a policy for the manufacture of ciao-margarine. MacDonald,.Fort Aug- ustus, said the report submitted by the dairy superintendent was an excellent one. He would like, however. the superintendent to ox- plaln why some factories paid more for milk than others. Upon Mr. MacDonald stating that some factories probably received sweet- er mllk and weire, probably, more exact in their weighing of cheese. Mr. MacDonald said ha thong-ht ii. was high time that the Provincial Government furnished the dairy superintendent with more assist- ance to inspect and give expert advice to the more inefficient fao- tories. Mr. B C. Helm, De Sable, said tho production of butter in the Province was going down so that. the farmer must expect tho people to turn to “something else." I-le did not know the reason for the decline in butter production. It might be that more fluid milk more canned milk. and more pow- dered milk were being sold.

Other Factors

Mr. l-Iolm said one way to build up butter production might be for the dalrymsn to try to raise more feed. Another factor was loyal support to the local factory- it was bed business to transfer ones business to another factory just because that factory happened to be paying a little more for the time being. He thought than. should be a "levelling off" in prices paid by the various cream- cries.

Colonel McLeod of Hartsviile thought there was something wrong with some of the co-opei- ative factories when the two large private creameries could pay two or more cents per pound for butter fat. If! companies in the business for profit could pay 72 cents per pound butter fat. Col. McLeod thought the non-profit organizations ought to be able to meet that price.

Mr. MacDonald's dairy report stated there was a 10.6 per cent decrease in the production of but- ter in the Province during. the first five months of 1947. In the month of June last. when the price ecli- ing was removed a-nd the cows goi- out to pasture. the production sharply increased. The total pro~ duction of butter last year was S.- 550.135 lbs. which was $6,010 lbs. less than the previous year.

The report also showed s de- crease in the production of cheese. Last year's production was 601,051 pounds as compared to 744,312 lbs. in i945.

Production Decline

Mr. W. R. Show, Deputy Min- ister of Agriculture, told the aftcrnoon meeting that livestock production had iously fallen in the Province during the lut 50 years. Mr. Show said he would not care to attempt to give a ast- isfactory reason for tho decline but he thought farmers were buy- i118 too lnuch fertilizer and too much imported grain at the ex- Pfluc of the maintenance of the livestock population.

Mr. Roland MacDonald said he did not wish to infer that the scientific men at the agricultural stations did not know their busi- ness. But it was an easy matter to tell farmers to put plenty of limestone on their farms and to grow more grain. The trouble was that the average farmer did not have the money to do those things. If the agricultural offici- als could tell the average farmer how to get the money to make all the investments he was told he should Jnake, farming would bo amore pleasant occupation for more formers.

Mr." MacDonald also thought there should be less talk from the rural milk producer about the high prices the dairymen livini! near Charlottetown were getting for their milk. There was a big difference in the cost of produc- tion between the two groups, Mr. MacDonald said.

Ho was supported in the latter statement by Ms‘. A. Macllae of the Charlottetown Milk Producers‘ Association. who said the high costs of feeda and the higher quality of milk required necessi- tated thc difference in price. Ninety-five cents per pound but- ter fat, Mr. MacRac said. left the Charlottetown dairyman little pro- fit.

Dr. J. A. Clark was called upon to give his opinion on general farming conditions in the Province before the close of last night's meeting. Dr. Clark said only an increase in the livestock produc- tion could prevent the disastrous consequences of further soil eros- ion. There was no fertilizer equal to that of manure and only the generous supplying of it could retain the trace elements so noc- essary for satisfactory yields.

Resolutions

Six resolutions were passed: (1) that the Provincial Government supply additional inmooicrs for the cheese factories during the summer months; (I) that the check testing syste be extended to cover adequately all dairy plants; (3) that in future the dalrymenb meetings be divided into cheese. butter, and fluid sec- tions? (4) that the Pmvincisl Gov- ernment ba urged to institute a bonus bull policy; (5) that veter- inarians be encouraged to set up practice in the Province; (6) that the importation, sale. and mann- facture of oleornsrgarlne be pro- hibited in Canada.

m. Earl Ings. Mount Herbert. was elected President of the P. E. Island Dainyrnenb Association, (Mr. Inga is still undergoing treatment at the P. E. Island Hos- pital for bums received in a. rec- ent accident); Mr. A. H. Hubley, Sumrnerside. was elected vice- prcsidlent; and m. S. C. Wright, secretary.

The Federation of Agriculture holds its opening session st 9:80 this morning and resumes at 7:30 pm. broken by a dinner at. the Charlottetown Hotel at 12:30.
