Cimerin _A SAD DROWNING accident occurred at Rus tico yesterday. It appears that two fisher- men named Joseph and Moses Gauchet (brothers) were ret irning home in a sail boat from the fishing grounds when a squall upset them and they were both drowned. One of the men was married and abvut 30 years of age; the other about 20 years old. They were both sons of Mr. Alex. Gauchet. The bodies were subsequently recovered. -

THE VOLUNTEER WINS.
New York, Sept. 27,
Pie first of the trial raves bet ween the America: yacht Volunteer, and the Scotch yacht Thistle, for the America’s Cup, took place yesterday. The Volunteer, which came im ahead by some eighteen minutes.in every Way demonstrated her superwrity over the Thistle in licht winds. The race was started at 12.55, the Thistle crossing the line first. The Volunteer soon passed her and sailed rapidly ahead, until at 12.55 she led the Thistle a mile. The Thistle was becalmed fora while, but at 12.55 she had a good full sail, but was not sailing as fast as her opponent. The Volunteer rounded the lightship on the home run at 3.44 p.m., followed by the Phistle at 4.02 p.m. At Sandy Hook, at 4.14 p.m., the Volunteer was four miles sbead. The Volunteer crossed the line at oh. 25m. 303s. The Thistle came in
over 18 minutes later. The wind at the tinish was blowing 12 miles an hour, weather
very hazy.

Half the battle for the possession of the America’s cup was won to-day, when the handsome sluop yacht Volunteer defeated the Scotch cutter Thistle 19 min. 23} sec., over the 38 mile course of the New York Yacht Club. It was generally understood that the Thistle was to be feared in a light breeze, but to-day’s race showed conclusive- ly that the Volunteer is more than a match for her. Owing to the protracted drought bush fires prevail throughout Ontario. Serious tires are raging about Chateauquay, St. Jerome and Terrebonne, P. Compared with former times we find that under the Scott Act the decrease in the consumption of liquor has been over two- thirds, and the decrease in the arrests for drunkenuess over two-thirds. Those who say there is more liquor drunk to-day than in former years say what is not true, and those figures prove that they do.
Are we going back under a system which nourished intemperance till the people of this province consumed an average of one gallon and a half per head, under a_ system which instead of restricting the traffic, can only exist by its extension ?
We only ask a fair and reasonable study of the facts and figures, and the Scott Act will be carried for the third time.
