One of the silltest lies ever told was the famous invention of Sailor Man John Bren- nan of Sligo. It was made out of whole cloth. There wasn't the shadow of founda- tion for it, but there was so much that wight have been true about it that it was cabled round the world wherever men go down to the sea in ships, and for several hours it kept hundreds of peoplo on the rack of anxiety.

About 3 o'clock on the afternoon of Oct. n was posted at the Mari

thange that the City of Rome had foundered off St , olf the t of Newfoundland. Abant the same time the bewspaper Oices got a dispatch from Sb. John’s, N. F., saying that Sailor Man John Brennan of Sligo, Ireland, had got into the little town of Trepassey that morning from Peter’s river and had declared that he was probably the only survivor of the City of Rome, which had struck on the rocks and gone down. He was in sucha condition of exhaustion that néthing more could be got out of him until he had had rest and nourishment.

That story was cabled and telegraphed everywhere, and at once the newspapers pegan to strive for further details. The first effort was to get confirmation or de- nial. It was found at once that the City vf Rome had suiled from New York at such & time that she must have been near St. Shotts when Brennan suid she was there. That looked like confirmation. ‘he even- ing papers got out extras with lists of the passengers and crew, pictures of the ship and her history. The oflices of the Anchor line agents were crowded with persons euger for But there was no nows. Friends of the passengers flecked about the place. The Maritime and Lloyd Reg- isters were searched fer roports of other

hips with names similar to that of the

City of Rome. An Italian Citta di Roma Was found, but when she was tracked it was found that she was all right.

Then the newspapers began to prepare to send men to the scene of the wreck. Boston papers got men off for Halifax, there to take ocean tugs for St. Shotts. All the time the telegraph and cable were worked for further news from Newfound- land. At last there came a dispatch from the cable station at Cape Race to the An- chor line agents here:

‘Your City of Rome ‘passed here on Tuesday. AJl well,’’ it said.

That was all. For the next 24 hours the truth hustled to overtake the lie. It suc- ceeded, but it was a hurd chase. Brennan had absolutely nothing on which to zo in making up his story. He couldn’t have known even that the City of Rome was in New York or had sailed. He just fired in the air, and, as may happen once in ten million times, he hit the mark.—New

How Princess Victoria Was Told ef Her Chance of Successicn.

Many interesting stories of the ‘‘Gir)- hood Days of England’s Queen’”’ are told in an article in St. Nicholas written by James Cassidy. Mr. Cassidy quotes the following from a letter written to the queen by her former governess, Baroness Lehzen:

Iask your majesty’s leave to cite some re- markable words of your majesty when oniy 12 years old, while tke regency bill was stillin progress. I then said to the Duchess of Kent that now for the first time your majesty ought to know your place in the succession. Her royal highness agreed with me, and I put the genealogical table into the historical book. When Dr. Davys—the instructor of the princess and afterward bishop of Petersborough—wes gone, the princess again openeti the book, as usual, and neticing the additional paper said, ‘‘I never saw that before.’’

“It was not thought necessary you should, princsess,’’ I answered.

“Il see I am nearer the throne than I thought.’’

After some moments the princess re- sumed: **Now many a child would boast, but they don't know the difficulty. here is much splendor, but much responsibil- _

The princess answered, ‘‘And if that were so 1 shoald never feel disappointed, for | know, by thy love Aunt Adulaiue bears me, how fond she is of children.”’
