Abbies Defeat Jr. B.Y.C. ll-8 In City Softball Encounter

In the only activity in the City Softball League last night the Ab- bies pounded out an 11-8 decision over the Junior B.Y.C. at Victoria Park.

Ced Ballem made his first start of the year on the mound for the Abbies a winning one as his mates backed up his 9-hit pitching with I 13-bit barrage.

Garnet Steele was the victim of the onslaught but except for a bad lapse in the 4th inning when the Abbles pushed across 5 runs on

4 hits and a walk the young Jun- ior hurler pitched creditable ball.

All of the Abbie hits were singles and Steele gave up only four walks but his mates made four errors behind him and they were costly ones.

The City Baseball league swings back into action tonight at Mem- orial Field with the Dodgers and Flyers tangling in the fourth Slim?-

Jimmy MacDonald's Flyers have yet to taste defeat in two putings. Last week they pounded out a 4-2 decision over the Stars and on Sun- day smeared ths Dodgers 13-0.

Hogan. playing on a lame leg and near exhaustion. went into the final 18 holes of the 72-hole tourney trailing Leonard by twi strokes. .

While Leonard's game fell apart for a whopping eight-over- par 79, Hogan fired a brilliant 68 for a 277 total to win the indi- vidual competition.

Leonard, near the top through- out the three days of play wound up with 206 and finished in sixth place among 58 players from 29 countries.

Balding shot a 76 for a 297 total to wind up 17th.

Canada held a three-stroke lead over the U.S. after the third round in which Leonard shot a 71 and Balding a 74. But the Americans niiickly overcame the deficit and ran away wilii the team victory.

SNEAD GETS HOT

Snead. after three medioc;-9 rounds, got hot with a 68 and'fin- islicd with 290 for eighth place, giving the Americans their 567 for a comfortable margin over sec. ond-place Bobby Locke and Gary Player of South Africa.

Hogan's second shot on the 505- yard fourth went into a bunker 60 feet from the pin. Just as Ho- gan did three years ago at Car- noustie when he won the British Open, he hold out the shot, this time for an eagle three.
