The past season was the Panther’s best ever as the team put together an impressive 6-1-3 record, good enough for third place in the league. The Panthers, who only recently came into existence, were also one of the top defen- sive teams in the league, allowing only four goals throughout the entire season. quick start, and Jennifer Andrews’ goal early in the first half proved to be the goal that would end the Panthers’ season. Despite a terrific effort by the Panthers, Acadia kept them score- less throughout the rest of the hard-played game, winning 1-0.

Despite the loss, the Panthers still proved themselves to be a serious contender in the league, a remarkable feat considering that the team has only been in existence for four years. played games in which they were outscored 29-13, the U.P.E.I. Panthers came up with their best performance of the season last Saturday night at the Charlottetown Civic Cen- tre. After trailing for most of the game, the Panthers scored three third period goals in less than four minutes, earning a 4-4 tie with the St. Mary’s Huskies. The tie allowed the Panthers to snap a four-game losing streak and improve their record to 0-4-2 heading into last Tuesday’s game against the Mt. Allison Mounties.

St. Mary’s opened the scoring at the 10:19 mark of the first period when Aron MacQuarrie found himself alone in front of Panther goalie Troy Barr and snapped a quick ten-footer past the goalie’s glove side. St. Mary’s, taking ad- vantage of a shaky start by U.P.E.I., dominated much of the period, forcing Barr to make a number of sharp saves to keep his team close. St. Mary’s, however, upped the score to 2-0 on a gift goal as Alex Herbison’s slapshot from the top of the face-off circle struck a Panther defenceman in front of the net and bounced into the goal.

The Panthers came to life in the second period, especially on the power play, spending much of the play in the Huskies’ end. This time, it was St. Mary’s goaltender Graeme Harvey who was forced to make big stops to keep his team in the lead; however, after being held scoreless for the first sixteen minutes of the

game, the Panthers got on the scoreboard when Paul Crabbe took a pass from Ken MacDougall from behind the net and one-timed a hard shot along the ice, beating Harvey to the glove side. St. Mary’s retaliated seconds later as Jerret DeFazio beat Barr to make the score 3-1 head- ing into the second period.

The first five minutes of the third period was all U.P.E.I. as they scored three fast goals to take their-first lead of the game. After K.J. White opened the scoring just over a minute into the period, Cory Power took a rebound and fired the puck into the empty side of the net to tie the game. The Panthers took the lead when White scored his second goal of the period, sliding a John Nelson pass between the legs of the falling Huskies’ goalie. The lead lasted only two minutes, though, as DeFazio scored his second goal of the game with 14:25 left in regulation time. The teams, with time winding down, played cautious hockey throughout the remainder of the period and into the five minute overtime period. The overtime was scoreless, resulting in the 4-4 tie, and the Panthers earned their first point at home this season.

The Panthers hit the road this weekend, travelling to Fredericton, New Brunswick, where they will play the UNB Reds Friday night and Saturday afternoon. The next home action for U.P.E.I. will be Wednesday, November 24 when they play the Moncton Blue Eagles.

*Now that the soccer and field hockey seasons | are over, the UPEI sports scene switches to Hockey, Basketball and Volleyball.

*The hockey team is seven games into their regular season and plays two games this week- end against the UNB Reds.

*The UPEI volleyball Panthers are on the road this weekend and will play St.FX Saturday and

_Sunday in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.

*The women’s basketball team is in Halifax this Friday, Saturday and Sunday where they will take part in a tournament hosted by the Dalhousie Tigers.

*The men’s team is at home this weekend where they will host the UPEI FALL CLASSIC at the Sports Centre. Invited teams include Acadia, Queens and Concordia. The tourney begins on | Friday.
