ENVIRONMENTAL CALENDAR

Sept. 14: The Department of Energy and Forestry invites members to the 9th Woodlot Management and Equipment Exhibition at the Auburn Demonstration Woodlot from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. This year's exhibition includes tour stops on selective harvesting, streamside management and strip cutting in mixed wood. Tour participants should arrive early to ensure a seat of the tour vans which will leave each hour.

Sept. 24: The Charlottetown Ducks Unlimited Dinner Committee will host its fund raising dinner at the CP Prince Edward. Contact Randy Dibblee or George Fulford for tickets which are $45 each. The price includes the annual membership and GST.

Oct. 1: Jim Wolford from Acadia University will be the Society's guest lecturer on the Natural History of Intertidal Mud (Gummy Mud) of Acadia. The meeting will start at 7:30 P.M. at the Farm Centre.

Nov. 5: Jennifer Brown will be the Society's guest lecturer for the monthly meeting. She will speak on Bats. The meeting starts at 7:30 P.M.

Dec. 3: The monthly meeting of the Natural History Society will feature Diane Griffin with "Where are we Going". The meeting will commence at 7:30 P.M. at the Farm Centre.

Jan. 7: The Society's Annual Meeting which starts at 7:30 P.M. will be followed by an illustrated talk By Dan McAskill on backyard and forest wildlife enhancement. The meeting will be at the Farm Centre.

PAGES FROM THE PAST - CIRCA 1926

Brian Dalzell, former Maritimes Breeding Birds Atlas Coordinator, wrote "I thought of the Island Naturalist when I found this old pamphlet among some papers belonging to my grandmother. She was a school teacher and was interested enough in birds that she collected many articles and books to show to her students....It is interesting to read what bureaucrats more than 60 years ago had to say about birds...."

The attachment was "An Appreciation of the Value of Birds” by Hon. John E. Myers, Minister of Agriculture, P.E.I. from the publication Birds A National Asset, views of the Provincial Ministers of Agriculture, Canadian National Parks Branch, Department of the Interior, 1926. Its foreword indicated that the
