Hall last eveninz—is an exhaustive analysis of the Bard of Avon's finest character; and we have no doubt that the select audience present duly ap preciated it. At all events it was repeatedly applauded; and, at the close, the learned lec- turer received a hearty vote ot thanks.

At Dorchester, N. B,, on the 13th inst., Elizabeth Burk, whom the Jury found guilty of an attenpt to poison her husband, and re- commenied to mercy, was sentenced to im- prisonment in the common gaol for a_period of one month. His Honor taking into considera- tion her illness and the five months she has al ready spent gaol. Tne Moncton ‘‘ Times” says, she seemed greatly delighted at getting “Off so easily.

Tue Cape Breton Board of Trade, says the ‘* Monetary Times,” are not dormant by any means. They are now to the front with a pe- tition to the Governor-in-Council praying for an appropriation teuwards establishing a weekly line of steamers between Cape Breton, P. E. Islard, other maritime ports and the lake cities, which, they claim, will not only encour- age inter-provincial trade, but materially de- crease the price of coal in Ontario.

Yesterday --Court day—the Chief Jus- tice was confied to his room, and his associate, Julge Hensley, was also unwell. Judge Reddin. of the King’s County Court, is onthe “unwell” list. The coughing on the streets, in our churches, in our shops, and places of public resort, is almost yeneral.

A destructive hurricane passed over Ber- muda on the 27th ult. The steamer Alpha, which arrived at Halifax from that place on the 12th, had as passengers fifty-six ship wrecked seamen, being the offizers and crews of the English steamers Kate and Dartington, brigantine H H. Raymond, of Weymouth, oat schooner Welcome Home, of St. John, N. B., which were wrecked during the hurricane. On the 4th inst. another hurricane passed over the Island entirely ruining the potato crop.

A cablegram was received at Pictou on the Lith by the owners of the bark Gunhilda, say- i .g that the ship had struck on Bordeaux Bar, France, and foundered. All hands perished. The Guanhilda was a bark of 700 tons, owned by Jas. W. Carmichael & Co., of New Glas-

‘American Presbyterians are troubled regard- ing 2 qu:stion of doctrine. The premillennial belief that Christ, on his second coming, will reign on the earth for a thousand years—and this in His own physical person—is reported to be steadily growing. At a recent New York conference, papers strongly supporting this do:trine were read by men high in the Presbyt2rian councils. The post-millennarians declare that although the highest bedy in the Church has never made a direct deliverance on the.subj ct, yet it has always been taken as the stan lard ot belief in the Church, that the second coming of Christ will be the final judgeme it. The question is now being di:- #1sied ia clerical circles throughout the United States, an | all parties agree that it will never be sett’ed until a deliverance from the Gencral Assembly upon it has been obtained.

Mr Dovaup Nicuorson of this city has obtained the agency of tue Coviey Portable Creamery for tas Province. Tae Creamery is au air ght ziue-lined box, about three by two feet capacity, calied a water sooler, which generally contains two cans. These cans are twenty luches acep and eight and one-half inches ia diameter; the covers are fastened down, and the air auder the rims of the covers prevents the passage of any water into the cans. ‘The caus are set in the water coolers, which are iined with metal, and fitted with) inlet and overflow for usiug flowing spring: water. These cvoiers are thoroughly built, with tight fitting covers, to exclude warm air, | and retard the melting of ice when used to! maintain a uniform temperature. A thermom- | eter is inserted im the front of each cooler, in} order that the temperature can be ascertained | without raising the cover. This apparatus is very simple, dispensing with costly muk rooms, | as but little room is required, and is the only | system that will produce uniform results, aud | antil some uniform is adopted there will} ieas many grades of butter ia the markct as there are makers. If the temperature of the water in the coolers is kept at 40° to 45° in spring and summer, and at 40° in winter, the cream will rise in twelve hours, in which case only cans enough to hold a single milking are required, or one-fourth of the capacity needed with any of the patent open-pan systems of sett- ing. Bythe submerged system of setting milk, we have Sweet Cream trom Sweet Milk, raised in the shortest possible space of time, a uniform quality and quantity of butter through not weather, which retains all the rich flavor of new milk, possesses superior keeping quali- ties, is firm in texture and uniform in cvlor, iree from casine or sour milk specks, and pos- sessing 2 peculiar rich flavor, which imparts inuch pleasure in eating. Gilt Edged butter can only be mide from cream taken from sweet milk. The Creanieries are ou exhibition at Mr. Nicholson’s store.
