PROHIBITION IN MANITOBA.

Te meaeure of prohibition before the Legislature of Manitoba will come into force on June 1, 1901. It makes pro- vision {or the closing of all places where liquor is sold, both in bulk or by the glaes with the exception of drug stores, which are permitted to sell under very stringent regulations, chiefly under orders of a physician and for illness only. Any per. son Caught infrin ging whe act will be sub- ject to a fine of not less than $200 and not more than $1000 for the first offence, and imprisOument of not than three mouths with hard labor, without the option Ot a fine, for the second breach. The wholesalers and manufacturers will po) be materially affected, as they are protect~ ed by the Dominion laws of t.ade and commerce, but so far asthe province is concerned, they will not derive one cent of revenue except from liquor allowed to drug etoree. Under the act they are pro- hibited from making sales of any kind in the province except in the instances stated, but will still have the power to import or to manufacture for the trade outside the province. They will, however, be prohib- ited from giving free drinks or dispensing liquor by the bottle or flask to their friends. Another feature of the act will be that no man Can /mport liquor by the bottle, flask, cask or any Other way than for his own use. For the enforcement of these regula- tions provision is made by way of giving the inspector full power of search, etc., and ample rewarde for convictions,

THE NEW TAXES.

By the bill now before the Legislature it ie provided that taxes shal! in future be levied as follows : —

1 Upon all companies accepting riske and carrying on business of insurance against fire in the Province whose prin- cipal office or organization is not within the Province, the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars each.

2 Upon all compsnies accepting riske and carrying on the business of insurance againet fire in the Province whose prin- Cipa! office or organization is within the Province the sum of seventy-five dollars each.

3. Upon al] Insurance Companies and Associations of anv kind having agencies or accepting risks upon the lives of per~ 8026 within the Province and transacting the business of life or endowment insur: ance therein a8 the sole object of their Organization, whose principal office or organization is not within the Province’ the eum of two hundred and twenty-five dollars each,

4, Upon all companies doing the busi nets of accident and guarantee insurance within the prevince the sum of fifty dol- lara each.

5. Upon all companies doing the basi-~ ness Of Marine Insurance within the Pro- vince the sum of one hundred dollars earh.

6. Upon all companies doing the busi- mess of trustor loan or building com- paniesorassociations within the province the eum of two hundred and twenty-five dollars each.

7. Upon every telegraph or other company working a telegraph line for the uve of the public within the Province the eum of three hundred and seventy-five dollars.

8. Upon all banks doing business in thie Province whose bead office is in this province, the sum of one hundred dollars each, if such bank haa not more than one office or piace of business within the pro- vince,

9. Upon all banks doing business in this Province, whether their organization and head office is within this Province or not, the sum of two hundred dollars, if such bank bas two or more offices or places of business within this Province.

10, Upon all companies doing business within this province manufacturing and: supplying vae or electricity for lighting, heating or motive purposes the sum of ove hundred and fifty dollars each.

11. Upon all companies carrying on tbe bueiness of commun carriars for the

| transportation of freight and passengers by

means of steamships whose head office or organization is witbin thie province, the sum of one hundred dollars each,and upon the Charlottetown Steam Navigation Com- pavy Limited the rum of two hundred dollars. ’
