Failures of the Half-Year.

Messrs. Dun, Wiman & Co. have issued their interesting review of the business of the past six months, with a record of the mercantile failures and a summary of the prospects for the future. The failures in the half-year were :—

The increase in liabilities, it will be noticed, is largely in excess of the increase in the number of failures, due in the case of the United States to the downfall of banking and broking firms in New York carrying enormous habilities, and in the case of Canada to the collapse of a few trading corporations having considerable debts. Compared with the neighbouring republic, with whose prosperity we are 80 intimately connected, Canada makes a fairly gvod showing, and two elements of disaster alone account for the increased bankruptcies of the half-year, excessive stocks and the deficient harvest. Taking it altogether, Dun, Wiman & Co. say, the first half of 1884 has been a period of greater strain upon the commercial fabric of the country than almost any preceding six months in its history. A hopeful view is, however, taken of the future, the agency saying:—
‘The injurious effects of recent events to commerce will be materially lessened by the possibilities contained in the promise of the growing crops, and the hopes entertain- ed that a year of great production will be vouchsafed to us. There is as much money in the land as there was six months ago. The troubles have been contined to narrow limits, as compared with the wide spread ratio of success possible to those who pur- sue the legitimate paths of enterprise and industry so plainly marked as avail- able in this vast country. No wide- spread desolation has swept over us, and there is more to be hoped for from a year’s progress and natural growth, supplemented by enormous immigration, and the full use of transportation and facilties of communi- cation, than is to be feared from anything that has yet occurred. The trade of the country has not been materially interfered with; the internal indebtedness of merchants is not excessive; and the ability to absorb and pay for goods, the basis of all legitimate trade, was never greater than now. The apprehension which has existed has caused stocks of goods, in the hands of retailers, to be brought down to a narrow limit. The low prices which prevail for a]] classes of staples the cheap living which the poor ought to ke enable to command, both in the way of food and clothing, ought soon to bring
demand for products of every kind. It is true that margins of profit have been re- duced to a minimum, = and that expenses of business and living ought to be adjusted to accord’ with this decline. This process has} al- ready made some progress, and while com- petition is severe and values decreased, there is still likely to be a fairer prefitable demand for merchandise and manufactures, with greater ability than ever to supply the demand and some certainty of safety in transactions based on legitimate needs. Under such circumstances it seems possible that the balanee of the year will have with- in it results more satisfactory than the first six months have brought.”
These remarks are applicable to the trade situation in Canada quite as forcibly as to that in the States, and they hold out.the promise of a gradual improvement, a pro mise supported by all the facts bearing on the condition of the crops, the extent of credits, and the supply of goods within the country.

The chief amusement with the boys of this place is the playing of base ball. <A keenly contested match took place here on Friday last, between the ‘‘Wharf Rat” club of this place and the ‘‘Stumpers” of the Head of Hillsborough, resulting in the defeat of the latter, to the great joy of the former.

JCDGMENT in the Turcotte-Lebeau case was given in Court at Montreal on the 3rd inst., by Judge Mathieu, in favor of the plaintiff. It will be remembered that Lebeau, who is sexton of the Catholic church at St. Laurent, while making the collection at a Sunday service, some time ago, passed the pew of Mr. Turcotte, without presenting the box. The latter felt grievously humiliated and immedia- tely entered an action for damages for $190 against the defendant. Judgment was given for $5 and costs in favor ot the plaintiff. It was proved that the sexton, on several occa- sions had expressed his intention of publicly insulting Mr. Turcotte on the first opportunity that offered,
