Don’t. keep posted in the great changes in agriculture the world over. These new kinds of farming practised and taught at college and experimental stations are van- ity and vexation of spirit. If we pay at- tention to them we will have to learn our businees over again.
Be sure you don’t engage with your neighbors in co-operative dairying. You cannot trust them. They just want to cheat you and Jive off your hard work. Keep your business under your own eye.
Don’t take uny pains to have a good article of produce to sell. If it is good enough for you, it ought to be good enough for others that are no better by nature than von are. Don’t stick them up.
Don’t take any pains to fiad out how much it costs to produce a pound of beef, a pound of pork, a bushel of wheat, oats or potatoes. If you knew you might be discouraged and then vou might fall a prey to those dairying fanatics and be in- duced to engage in that business to your utter ruin. Keep your eye on those dairy professors.
Don’t cell those two or three extra horses, unless you get as much for them as your neighbors got a few years ago. You would be giving the horse buyer his own way and this would be bad. Better keep them to eat up the surplus hay and oats and for the boys to drive about after night. Be good to the boys.
Don’t attend any agricultural meetings or discuss agricultural questions. It’s childish. But go to all the political and other meetings and talk as learnedly as you can. This is good unto edification:
Don’t take an agricultural paper. Or if in an unguarded moment you should sub- scribe for one, don’t even read it; it might draw your attention away from politics and other matters of infinitely more im- portance. Be sure and take all the poli- tical papers published by your own party and read them carefully, so that when you meet your political opponeit you may be able to give him a reason for the belief thatis in you. “This matter is import- ant.”
Don’t consider yourself nearly as good a3 the professional man, or your calling as honorable. Keep yourself humble; but try to exalt every other calling but your own by toadying to professional and buri ness men and politicians, This wil! have the good cttect of making farming un- popular aud inducing the young peop'e to leave the farm for more honorable and congenial eccupations. Don’t forget this
Don’t give the boys any pecuniary inter- est in the farm or stock; it might make them feel too, big if they had pocket- money of their own, and they might spend it foolishly in the purchase of a jack-knife o- arazor. Be careful of the boys.
Don’t buy the women any of the many labor-saving devices; let them rub a
scrub away “and sew as jong as their eyes can see,” and knit after they get blind, you know they
can do that if they are good knitters. Besides, we inust keep them busy. There is alwaye great danger from the unem- ployed, and in this case they might take to reading or discussing “woman’s rights” or, &@ more serious matter for us, woman’s wrong. Be careful to guard against such a calamity.
Don’t take any pains to pay up your bills in the fall, if yon have been so for- tunate as to be able to deal on credit. Get the merchant to carry over your account till next fall. You will be better able to pay itthen. Times will brighten up after the election, when your party gets into power. Everything depends on the elec- tion. Be sure you spend all your spare time from now till then working for your party, and let things about the farm look after themselves in the meantime.
Now, in conclusion and finally, don’t do as I tell you, but get better advice, or else you will still be with the great un- progressive majority.
—The New Zealand Legislature has limited speeches in the House to half an hour, and in committee toten minutes. Mr. Stead thinks it “acurious comment upon the various proverbial sayings as to female Joquacity that the first legislature which women hada voice should have been the first to put a drastic time limit upon the chatter of Parliament.” But it is highly probable that this reform would have been achieve/ without the aid or initiative of female legislators. The New Zealand debates were becoming notorious for their length, being far more volumin- ous than those of any of our Canadian legislatures; and their diffuse platitudes and vain repetitions were being sent to the four corners of the earth with reckless ex- travagance. For some years past large bales of them were received at Ottawa for distribution. Some check was badly need- ed for the verbosity which produced and the costly vanity which circulated these uncondensed vapourings. If legislators would pass a self-denying ordinance oblig ing themselves to telegraph their speeches to their country eapere at their individual expense, it would beget an admirable terseness of style among parliamentary orators.

Dr. Rossin has returned from the city to his friends and patients here. He looks and feels well despite his trying position. Morning, noon and night he is on the move visiting the sick.
The ice has formed on our river, and many are taking advantage of it to draw from their slimy beds the slippery eel. Judging from the number engaged and the large catches the business promises to be a profitable one.
Our grocery men are doing a good trade. Mr. James C. Stevenson is always ready to supply good goods at prices to suit the times,
We regret to learn of the resignation of the Rev. Mr. McKenzie from the Presby terian church. He goes to accept a call to St. Stephen’s, New Brunswick. May de- served success reward him in his new field of labor. The Presbyterian church here is now without a pastor.

The memoirs of Sir John Macdonald, by Joseph Pope, just published, ccntain the record of a little transaction by Ras Wiman, which will, notadd to that gentleman’s reputation for either honor or acuteness In 1884, when Wiman was hand in hand with Sir Richard Cartwright, Edwerd Blake and other leaders of the liberal party in Canada, the distinguished apostle of commercial union wrote a letter to Sir John Macdonald, “conveying the start ling intimation thata park plot was on foot to wrest Manitoba from the British crown by an armed insurrection, and among the promoters of this nefarious scheme were Blake, then leading the Op- position, and Sir Richard Cartwright, his first lieuteuant.”
To this Sir John Macdonald replied, writing from Riviere du Loup, September 11, 1894, as fullows :
“My Deak Mr. Wimaw :—Thanks for yours of the 6th inst. I can quite under- stand-——-—’s mode of action. He goes to Wash ngton and exaggerates the state of feeling: in Manitoba. Most probably the gentlenen he sees receive him politely and say they will be very glad ;f Canadacan be induced to join the union. With this statement he proceeds to Winnipeg, and pursues the same course of exaggeration. I don’t believe a word of his statement about Mr. Blake and Sir Richard Cart wright. The latter has expressed his be- lief in the future independence of Canada; but that is all. Neither of them would countenance for a moment anything like a rising in arms. I shall look forward with interest to your promised communication after visiting Washington. I shall be at Ottawa after this week. I need only say how much obliged to you I am for the in- terest you take in this matter.”
It is is recorded that Sir John dictated that letter with perfect gravity, and that he then smiled grimly and said : “This is a new role for me, defending Blake and Cartwright.” Mr. Pope asked Sir John what motive Wiman could have in writ- ing such rubbish. “Oh,” replied Sir John “he wants to ingratiate himself with me, and he thinks this statement, with which he has been stuffed, will be acceptable to me, because it reflects upon my Oppon- ents.”
