The R. C, A. Exhibition.

The St. John Telegraph has the following criticism of the pictures on exhibition which were painted by Mr. R. Harris:—No one can enter the gallery without having his eye very svon attracted towards a large picture labelled in the catalogue ‘'The Color-Sergeant Hard Pressed.” The pic- sure is strong, broad, vigorous and cuom- plete, The standard which flutters behind the sergeant is, however, so indefinitely ex- pressed that it is hardly noticeable, and the paint is plastered on very roughly. The features are expressive, and this is Mr. Harris’ strong point, as those who examine the firm, clear cut face of ‘‘Somebody’s Grandfather,” and the ‘‘Ecclesiastic,” will readily discover. ‘‘A Glass Too Much” is trne to the original specimens as seen in St. John. ‘Finishing Touches” is weak, and in 138, ‘*Father and Son,” the flesh tint on the face of the latter is too glaring. The picture bas a moral, and the concep- tion is better than the execution, being based on the lines: ‘‘And son from sire, through passing generations, learns the fate of all.”

FATAL AFFRAY AT A DANCEHOUSE,

Los ANGELES, July 21.—A serious cut- ting affiay occurred in tae Spanish portion of the city this morning at 2 o’clock, at a dance hall. It seems that a Mexican named Rawou Silvas was sitting outside of the house, when two men, James F. McIntyre and Timo thy Hickey came out, and, as is claimed by Silvas, pushed rudely against him. He jumped back, drew a knife, and then attempted to cut Hickey. A _ ecnfle ensued, in which Mclutyre tried to grab the knife, but in the attempt had his fingers nearly cut off, hanging to the hand by only the skin. The infuriated Spaniard then stabbed and slashed at McIntyre three times, two of the cuts entering the region of the heart, the other being a ter- rible cut across the abdomen, exposing the intestines, McIntyre died almost instant- ly. He was a native of Prince Edward Island, living the greater part of his time in Gloucester, Mass. He was forty-six years of age, and has been in Los Angeles the past two years.

At Hong Kong, China, on 4th July last,

William Boughton Spratt, aged fifty-seven years. Deceased was a native of Charlotte-

town, and a brother of Mrs. Alfred LePage, and Mrs. Henry Blatch, of this place.

On the 18th Jaly ult., Roderick Campbell, Esq., at his residence at the Royalty, George- town, where he resided for many years, and where he successfully practiced the profession of Land Surveyor, in which calling he was well and favorably known, a man of modest and unobtrusive character, and_ greatly esteemed by ail with whom he came in con- tact. He was born at Cape Traverse in this Province, and was at the time of his demise aged 75. In the early years of his residence in this country he resided at Georgetown, where he taught school, and subsequently at Lower Montague. He leaves a widow, three daughters and one son, and a large circle of relations and friends to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent father, and the com- munity in which he so long moved a disinten- ested and obliging neighbor.
