Hovsron, Texas, Sept. 10.—The West coast yesterday morning, wrought awfu! havoc.

In the last report the news is conflict- ing. But it is known that an appalling disaster has befall the city of Galveston, where it is reported a thousand or more lives have been blotted out and tremenr duus property damages have beea in» curred.

The estimate made by the citizens of Galveston was that four thousand houses, most of them residences,had been destroy - ed and that at least one thouaand people had been drowned, killed or are missing.

The city is acomplete wreck. Most of the sailing crafte were wrecked. They were cither piled upon the wharves or are floating, bottom side up, in the bay.

There isa email steamer ashore three miles north of Pelican Island. But your correspondert cannot distioguish her name. She was flying the British flag.

Ano:her big vessel) has beeu driven ashore at Virginia Point, and still an other is aground at Texas City.

At Houston Point, off Houston Island, an unknown ship lies in a belpless con~ dition.

The city is in darkness, the electric plant having been ruined.

There is no way of estimating the property damage at present.

The eastern portion of the city, which is the residence district, is * practically wiped oat of existence. On the west end, which taces the gulf, and on agother por tion of the island mach havoc is done,

The beach bas been swept clean. Bath houses are desiroyed, and many cf the residences there are total wrecks.
