A Cuaiosity.—Something of « curiosity was discovered a few days ago by Mr. John A. Ritchie, of King Square. While opening a barrel of E. Island cysters, he came across & plece of sandstone in the shape of a naman foot. One side of the stone is almost @ iactimile ofa foot, while the other looks as thongh it had suffered a ‘‘cave-in.” Mr.

The House went into committee on Tup- per's steamboat inspection act. The bill was amended so that the Governor-General in Couneil could make regulations in re- gard to life preservers to be carried by steamboats.

In regard to a question raised by Hazen about ateamboats being allowed to use wooden buckets as well as leather and metallic ones, Tuppsr said that to adopt rules in foree in England, where any kind

| of buckets could be used, it would be neces-

sary to carry a large supply of hose which wovld reach any portion of the vessel. This would be a_ heavy and nautical «fiicers consider it unwise to change the existing rules. Wooden buckets, too, were very liable to get out of order. Neo representations were made to the Government against the present class of buckets used. Mr. Tupper agreed to take power to deal with the question of buckets by an order in Council, same as was done with life boats, and the bill will be reported.

Hon. C. H. Tupper’s reso'ution regard- ing lobsters coming up, he said ip reply to Davies that all correspondence would be brought down affecting this matter, when he hoped the House would not treat it in a party manner. The resolutions were re- ported and afterwards referred to his act to amend the fisheries act in which they will be incorpors‘ed.

Watson, of Marquette, moved a resolu- tion to place binder twine on the free list. Mulock seconded the resolution. There was a debate taking the usual wide range, after which the resolution was lost, 63 to 107.

The Legislature assembled yesterday. Le Blanc has been elected Speaker. Mercier, it is believed, wil! be expelled from hia seat in the House and an election will be ordered in Bonaventare, as the Leader has not yet re- signed his seat. Stephens, of Huntingdon, and Fitzpatrick declare that they will give DeBoucherville an independent support.

Public Works’ Expenses.

Orrawa, April 27. Since Confederation up to June, 1890, the Dominien Government has spent 832,500,000 on public works in the different provinces. The figures for the Maritime Provinces are : Nova Scotia, 32,226,000; New Brunswick, $2,994,000; P. E. Island, $742,000.
