The script of Typecasting is based on hours of taped interviews with Island newcomers, and on several days’ observance of Charlottetown secondary school classes. The choreography is set to music that ranges from Third World folk traditions to contemporary North American rock. While the words examine the issues, the dance pieces portray the memories, feelings, thoughts, and energy of the young people; creating graphic, indelible images of cultures colliding and coming together.

Typecasting is designed specifically for students in Grades Seven through Twelve. However, as it looks at issues central to the immigrant experience, both
