The Recent Elections.

Tne Opposition press throughout the Lower Provinces have been persistently re- peating the statement that the Liberal leaders. made Free Trade the issue in the Bye-Elections which have recently taken place; and they triumphantly point to the fact that the Conservative majority has diminished in West ‘i'orunte, while the Liberal one has increased in North Ontario, as evidence that the people are only want- ing an opportunity to overturn the National Policy. Of te Selkirk Election we do not hear much. But, of course, nothing is to be deduced from that !

Unfortunately for our Opposition friends, the published speeches of Mr. Blake and others show conclusively that, at any rate, so far as the West Toronto election was concerned, many side issues were drawn into the centest. The Leader of the Op- position pandered te every prejudice that he thought might be harbored by his hearers both as regards Dominion and Local affairs. The ghost of the Pacific Seandal was again inveked and made de duty in West Toronto, as it has been in every contest forthe past few years. Ajl Mr. Blake’s ingenuity and eloquence were employed to mske the gaunt spectre alarm the electors of the Queen City and.persuade them into voting against Sir John Mace- donald and his present Pacific Railway Policy.

The Toronto Telegram, an independent jeurnal, with leanings towards Mr. Blake, felt itself compelled to use strong language in denunciation of his attempt thus te re- vive a dead issue. The Telegram said :-—

** We had supposed that our public men had go away in advance uf the Pacific Seandal, and that they had buried it out of

sight forever, beyond the hepe of resurrec- tion. But it seems not Mr. Blake haa

would have been less of a surprise if any ether of Sir John Macdenald’s oppenents than Mr. Blake had done this, for he is looked upen as the embediment of ad- vanced ideas ‘To go back to the grave of the Pacific Scandal and rattle the dried bones again in order to frighten the alect- ors back from the Conservative candidate, is to admit that he has retrogaded from his advanced position and is willing to do the work of a political hack. It is quite natural that he should be anxieus to inflict a blow upon the Macdonald Ministry-and that he is prepared to adopt the motto of ‘Anything t:) beat Beatty.’ But it is a disappoint- ment to the future hope of the country to see their idol revamping the worn-out issues of the past, instead of striking out boldly in the direction of progress. The Pacific Scandal is dead. The people cen

sented to forget it when they sent Sir John Macdonald back to power, and to rake up its ashes and throw them in the eyes of the great body politic at this late day is un- worthy of a man of Mr. Blake’s great mind,”

In addition to this piece of evidence, which, we think, shows pretty conclusively that side issues were relied upen to infiu- ence the electors of West Toronto and that the Liberal leaders dare not trust exclu- sively to their pet hobby of one-sided Free Trade, we have the still strenger evi- dence in Mr. Ryan’s card to the electors of St. George’s Ward, as published in the To- ronto papers :—

** Your support and vote are requested for Alk, Peter Ryan, of St. George’s Ward. The unanimous choice ofthe Liberal Party in Convention assembled as their Candi- date, in opposition to the nominee of the Government at Ottawa, and as a supporter of the Hon. Edward Blake. Vote for Ald. Ryan and protect yourself against the bur- densome taxation of the Ottawa Govern- ment and against the proposal of Mayor Beaty to abolish the Provincial Legislation aud Toronto as the seat of Government, ”’

Yet, even with these side issues, combin- ed with the eloquence of Mr. Blake and the vituperation of Mr. Mackenzie, the Liberals were unable to lower the Conser- vative vote from what it was in 1878.. Mr. Beatty and Mr. Wright, both of whom de- clared themselves supperters of the Na- tional Policy, together polling abeut the same number of votes as Mr. Robinson in 1878.

With reference to the recent election in North Ontario, we are not infermed as to the details of the-contest. We remember, however, gileaning from the Opposition press of Ontario that the farmers in that Province were ripe fer rebellion, that they were champing the bit of their iron lot, and that they wanted only an opportunity to show their detestation ef the fiscal policy

—in a rural constituency, to see that while Mr. Wheeler managed to add a few vetes to his majority, yet he owed them entirely to the two towns—Uxbridge, in which he resides, giving him 112 of his majority, and Port Perry, 47 ; whileJiis total majority was 158, ont of a total vote of 4,500.

It does not look frem these two elections as if the people of Ontario felt themselves so terribly outraged by the existing tariff.

As regards the Selkirk election, if the Opposition wish it to be understood that the battle there was between Free I'rade and Protection, of course we will not object. No pledge was given to support the party with whom he had been identified for the last seven years,from the day when he shamlessly abandoned his leader in the hour of his need to the present Nay, we have been told, and by one who wasin Manitoba at the time of the election, that it was more than once hinted, during the canvass,that Mr. Donald A. Smith, in the event of his election, might not improbably give the Government an ‘‘independent support.” But it was all to no purpose. Mr. Smith was defeated by 158 votes, and the people of Yanitoba have emphatically declared themselves in favor of the poliey of Sir John Macdonald and colleagues.

The Government have ceniainly every reason to feel assured of possessing the confidence of the country. They have been two years in office; and although borne in, as it were, on the top crest ofa great re- |action, they are actually ten streng- rer on a division than they were on the 17th September, 1878. Since tit date, with- out counting the elections consequent upon Ministers taking oftice, there have been nine Conservative constituencies opened, viz., Beauharnois, Bonaventure, Cape Breten, Montmorency, Provencher, Three Rivers, West Toronto, Yale and Yamaska ; and the Conservatives have kept them all. During the same period there have been eight Liberal constituencies opened, viz.,

Had the Government lost ten votes, toming in as they did with such an enor- mous majerity, it would net have surprised anyone; for it is usual for the popularity of a Government to wane.from their first accession to power. Mr. McKenzie so far frem holding his own, had lost in two years —we do not recollect how many seats—but almost all, that it was possible to lose; for, especially during the last years ef his reign, to open a constituency meant to lose a seat, We look upon the record ef the present Government as something phenomenal.

We place these facts before the public of Prince Edward Island. We ask them to consider them carefully, and then to say, whether they are not the best possible evi- dences in the world, that the present Goy- ernment is popular with the people ef Can- ada. What stronger could be adduced ? And yet in tlie face of hard facts, like these, we see daily in the columns of the Putriet, et hoe genus omne, that the people of this country are waiting only an opportunity to ‘hurl from power the men by whom they have been so shamelessly deceived and be- trayed.”

Indeed, we read in a prominent Grit Organ not long ago, that one ef the minis- try was already looking for ‘‘ a safe place, where he might hide himself from the sterm of 1883.” It is too much to say that the men who would write this rubbish would write anything.
