More Trouble in Afghanistan.

Owing to this engagement it is thought doubt- ful whether any further attempts at negotia- tion will Le made until the military issue is settled. The tribes in and abeut Kohistan are reported to be ina state of great excite- ment on account of the news received there that the Governor of Turkistan, with 6,000 men and 12 guns, is marching to their aid. In View of the possibility of renewed outbreaks, General Roberts has ordered 12 new forts, which have been recently ereeted near Cabul, to be strengthened, and as many men as can he spared to be added to the garrisop. A short discussion arese on Schultz's motion for orders in. council affecting the settlement of the Dominion land in Mani- toba, from which it appears that the immi- gration of the people inte Manitoba from the United States is quite large during the present season.

The Dublin Freeman's Journal, the clerical organ, referring to Canada’s vote for ‘the relief of Ireland says the sum donated -by the Canadian Government is rounificent, The article pays a high eom- phiment to Sir John, and says itis only a specimen of his liberal and just policy pursued fer JS years. ¥

The University Boat Race.

Great crowds lined the river to witness the race between the Oxford and Cambridge crews at Putney, on the 22nd inst. The course was the usual one, from Putney to Mortlake, 44 miles. The Oxford crew was the first te paddle to the starting point, and having previously won the toss, took the Middlesex side of the river. Two minutes after the boats reached the start- ing point a magnificent start was effected at the rate of 40 strokes per minute. For some vards the boats continued level, but the Cambridge crew rowing a quicker stroke drew ahead, and were leading by a of a length when last seen from this point. When the beats rounded Craven Point, six furlongs from the start, and came in sight of Hammersmith, the Cambridge crew was still leading, but so slightly that the lead was almost im- perceptible until the boats were actually opposite the persen watching them from the bank of the river. Just before reach- ing Hammersmith bridge Oxferd made a grand effort and rapidly drew up. W hen the boats passed under the bridge, a mile further on, the Cambridge crew was leading
