NEW YORK, Jan. 2—The stock market greeted the first tradl session of the new year with s mild advance on modest volume.

The market got sway to an ln- diitcrent start and ruled within a comparatively narrow. range until late 1n the session when activity broadened somewhat at improving prices among various industrial shares.

The Associated Press average tor 00 selected stocks advanced .18 oi a point t0 40.87. Fair gains 1n the industrial. section o! the market contrasted with generally lower prices for rails and utilities. A t0- tsl o1’ 878.900 shares changed hands compared with 1,018,000 on Mon- day. America Van rallied sharply for a net gain of 3 points to close at 117 1-4, a new high tor the past year. In spite o1 sharp gain in the steel operating rate, shares oi’ U. B. Steel and other steel oom- penles met some selling by those who were disturbed by the possi- bility o! labor unrest in the indus- try. Losses were confined to lrse- tions in two instances. U. S. Steel closed 3-4 lower at 38 1-4 while Bethlehem gave up 1-4 to finish at 32 l-4. Republic wss unchanged at 15. at 50 1-2 Jones & Laughlin was also unchanged. '

Case closed at 80 with a gain o1 2 3-4. Cerro de Pasco scored a point at 45. Radio B was rather quiet and showed an advance of 1-2 at 41 3-4. American Telephone. at 105 5-8, was up 5-8. Consolidated Gas was unchanged at 20 1-4.

Amongst Canadian stocks Ford o! Canada A was the best perform- er. scoring an advance of more than s point. The B stock was up tractionslly.
