Election of Mr.

Mr. Bike is again a momber of Parlia- mont. Has was elected by acclamation in West Durham, on the 17th inst. He takes the seat vacated for him by Mr. Burke Mr.

Surke is a Grit of mediocre ability. Mr. Blake is the most brilliant and one of the ablest men of the party. It is, therefore, for the good of his country that the change has beenmade; for it is of paramount importance that our best men should be in Parliament. In Opposition, the erratic genius of Mr. Blake will find more congenial employment than when tied down to the prosiac duty of working in the Govermental team with such unimaginative individuals as Mr. McKenzie and Mr. Mills, and compelled to submit to the dictation’ of Senator Brown with his Glo de.

It has been stated that Conservatives showed the white feather because they did not oppose the election of Mr. Blake. But tris is not so. West Durham has always been one of the most pronounced Grit constituencies in Ontario. And even when the Conservatives swept the country in 1877, it elected the Mr. Burke who lately resigned to give place to Mr. Blake. It is true Mr. Burk’e majority was a small one ; anditis probable that Mr. Burke would have resigned in time to let Mr. Blake re- present the constituency last session, had there not been grave doubts that even in West Durham a Grit could be elected so s20n after the great Conservative victory. In this instance prudence was, doubtless, batter than valor. Under the influences of time, party feeling has, to some extent, cooled down. The Conservatives have per- mitted Mr. Blake to be elected unopposed, and the country is agam to have Mr. Biake’s great ability exerted in its proper sphere (in opposition) in her behalf.

i The Trouble in Europe.

Tus news from Europe is again warlike. The European stock market is disorganized —a bad sign. But the sensational dispatch to the effect that England has already severed diplomatic relations with Russia, is unconfirmed.

DRAWBACKS, ETC.

The following appears in the last issue of the Canada Gazette: *‘A drawback of duty paid on all canvas, paints and oils, chains, spikes, iron and iron knees, actually used in the construction of any ship or vessel built and registered in Canada, or built in and exported from Canada under Govern- ment for sale, and registering in any other country since 15th of March Jlast, may be granted and paid by the Minister of Customs under such regulations as to him may appear to be necessary, provided that such drawback shall not exceed an amount egual to forty cents per registered ton of such ship or vessel when constructed without iron knees and fifty cents per register ton when con- structed with iron knees.

“Sulphuric and nitric acid, when import- edina mixed state, will be charged the same 43 nitric acid, viz., 20 per cent. ad- valorem. :

“The United States consular agent here has been notified that neat cattle from Canada will be prohibited from entering the United States after Decomber Ist next.”

What's your name?’ The fel- low then quickly replied, ‘It is none of your d—— business.” Mr. Butcher caught hold of him ; threw him to the ground and called to his son to bring alight. Young Mr. Butcher came to the door and, seeing his father hold- ing the man on the ground, returned for a light. While the young man was in the house another individual came to the rescue and re- versed matters by relieving his ‘‘pal” and throwing Mr. Butcher violently against the

stone doorstep in front of his dwel- ling and _ breaking , his left — wrist. Young. Butcher then came to his father’s relief; kicked one off and pulled the

other away, and recognized them as Francis Stanley and John Hoar—two mechanics and residents of the city. Stanley went away with young Butcher and expained how the af- fair occurred. ‘That he was standing in the lane when his father came out ete.” When young Butcler returned to his father, he in- formed him that his wrist was broken. Varrants were issued for the assailants and they were promptly arrested. They appeared at the court this morning for examination. The evidence of Mr. Richard Butcher was heard. ‘‘He stated that, owing to the injuries received, his father was unable to attend the court; that he did not think Stanley was in liquor when he committed the assault ; but Hoar was. He thought Stanley was stunned when his father threw him down the first time, as his head struck a large stone at the corner of the house.”” Both prisoners were remanded for eight days for further examination. Stan- ley gave bail for his appearance. >_> - —-—

A muetine of gentlemen interested in the lobster packing business (including the In- spector of Fisheries—Col. Davar) was held at the Revere House last evening, and a commit- tee was appointed to wait upon the Minister of Marine and Fisheries with representations respecting the ‘‘close season.”” The prevail- ing opinion of lobster packers is that no ‘*close season” is required in this Island-—in other words that our lobster fishing grounds are practically inexhaustible. The Committee consisted of Hon, D. Davies, Hon. Peter Gavin, and Mr. Sheed. They waited upon the Minister of Marine this forenoon and were cordially received.—Their request was that the close season be from 15th May to 15th September instead of as at present. The Minister gave a favorable hearing to the Delegation, and instructed them to put their request in writing and forward it through the Inspector of Fisheries.

Messrs. Mituar Bros. have received in- structions to import a powerful Mason & Hamlin organ for the new Baptist Church, which is to be opened shortly.
