REDUCTIONS ON THE INTEKCOLONTAL. The staff of the Intercelonial Railway

has been largely reduced by the present economical Government. Theusands of dol- lars have thus been saved to the country. Referring to the recent discharge of some fifty men engaged at Moncton, the Moncton Times says : -

The facts are that for five years Canada was cursed with a Government that preached economy to cover up the most reckless ex- travagance ; that treated the public treasury as afund designed for the exclusive and un- limited use of thorough-paced Grits ; that to promete party ends crowded every branch of the public service with their friends, utterly regardles of any consideration that ought to have weight with the guardians of the public interests. The result, the inevitable result. was that the present Government, upon assuming office, found the treasury empty, and every branch of the public service over crowded with unnecessary officials. The Rail- way particularly, though rapidly running behind hand, and rapidly becoming an intole- rable burden to the taxpayers of Canada, was nevertheless being managed regardless of ex- pense, —and so that the returns showed steadily increasing expenditure for a steadily decreasing traffic. ‘The Government resolved at once to do what any prudent business man would do under like circumstances. They determined to curtail expenses and to spare no effort to bring the revenue and expenditure more nearly together. They resolved to operate the line with as few hands as a

siderable sum of money; for, until this be done, no matter how honest the Admin- istration of to day may be, the money must, of necessity, be frittered away.

It must also be remembered that we have ever asserted the absolute right of the Island toa share of the Award. But we formerly thought the money should come to us through the Dominion Govern- ment. Now we think it advisable that it be funded at Ottawa, and right that the Local Government should have the disposition of the interest of it. We at first supposed that the fisheries and our interest in them had passed to the Do- minion Government, just as our railway was passed to it. If, by a contract with persons in the United States, our rail- way were benefitted to the extent of a mil- lion or two of dollars, it would be mani- festly unfair for the Local Government to obtain the disposition of the money. But, on reference to the terms of Confederation, we find it stipulated that ‘* the railways under contract and in course ef construction for the Government of the Island shall be the property of Canada” ; while, with reference to the fisheries, it is only agreed that ‘‘ the Domi:.ion Government shall assume and de-

Mr..Tasse took exception to the manner in which the report of the Minister of Marine and Fisheries was prepared. It was too bulky ; the last year’s report numbered 2,200 pages, while the first report, in 1868, only numbered 160 pages. He believed the whole of the matter could be put 300 or 400 pages. He mentioned several mat- ters in the report which he considered un- necessary.

After some remarks by Mr. Hackett, Hon. Mr. Pepe referred to the steamer ‘‘ Glen- don.” He said that vessel was no_ credit either to the Government or the Depart- , ment. She was very little use except asa ‘scow. He read from a_ report of Capt. Brown’s to the effect that the vessel was un- seaworthy.

Sir Albert Smith said the ‘‘ Glendon,” though a poor model and not up to the ex- pectations under which she was purchased, had rendered a great deal of service and was still very useful. The item passed.

In regard to the half-yearly mail subsidy between Halifax and Cork and steam navi- gation between Nova Scotia and St. Pierre, not included in estimates, Hon. Mr. ‘Tilley said both services were under consideration of the Government.

The National Policy and the Nova Scotia Coal Trade.

Mr. Dobson, who arrived at Halifax from Ottawa, on the 30th ult, has been doing a good stroke of business for the local com- panies. The Nova Scotia coal owners have contracted, through him, with railways, gas companies and other consumers in the Upper Provinces to deliver 98,000 tons of Pictou and Cape Breton coals at Quebec, Montreal, Ottawa and Belleville at lower prices than the United States coals of sim- lar quality can be delivered. The Grand Trunk has contracted for 40,000 tons Pic- tou, 20,000 tons deliverable at Belleville; and the same amount at Montreal. Red- paths refinery contract for 25,000 tons ; Vitawa gas aud other gas companies have also made coniracts of Cape Breton coal ; Montreal takes 15,000 tons, au! other places also have ordered.
