Malinda Accounts for It.

A lady in Mississippi, while ou a Visit r at spring to New Orleans, pur- chased a “setting” of Pekin duck eggs, and he after her return to her country heme placed them under a hen. A week later, seeing the hen feeding in the yard, she went to the nest to see if the eggs were all right and was some- what surprised to find the eggs mach whiter and smaller than she had suppos- ed they were. ;

Two week later the old hen came off the nest followed by ten little chicks. This nonplussed the lady, and she was pot atall sparing in her bitter com, ments on the ‘dishonest poultry man in New Orleans,” who had “pr acticed & fraud” on her.

A week later her cook told her of a singular circumstance that had just happened “dowa ter the quarters,” how “Aunt Malioda” had “set a lot ef hen’s eggs and they had hatched out ducks.” The lady started forthwith to the quarters, when sure enough, she found “Aunt Malinda” and the brood of web feet. The ole darky had a mar- vellous story to tell, and professed to be greatly astonished when her mistress related her venture with her duck eggs.

“Hlow do you aceount for it, Aunt Malinda?” asked the lady.

“Well, Miss Mary, der ways of Pro vidence is numereus and past findio’ out. Yer know chile, der Bible teaches us dat nuffin’s onpossible with God.”— Detroit Free Press.

Among the weddings of the past month one that quite excited social; circles should be a warning to dilat ory | ladies,though it does not redound great- ly to the credit of the first bridesmaid. The facts were these:—The guests were in the church,also the bridegroom and his best man. Then the brides maids arrived and there was much runniog to and fro and consultation in the vestibule. Finally the ushers ap- peared walking up the aisle arm-in-arm, and whea they got to the altar the en and first bridesmaid ad- vanced and got married, It subsequent- ly transpired that the bride was a capricious person, who had set two ditferent occasions for the ceremony and then changed her mind. At last, on the day of the wedding, something displeased her about her dress, and she said she would not get married that day ; but her friends thought they could persuade her. In the meantime the patience’ of the bridegroom was_ ex- hausted, and the bridesmaid agreed to console him. Just as the «ceremony was over the criginal bride drove.up to the church with her uncle to fiad she was too late. She was quite calm, however, and merely remarked that “perhaps it was just as well as it was.”
