To pay no new cases of small-pox are re- ported at Alberton. It was currently report- ed this forenoon that the Railway authorities forbid trains to stop at Alberton Station. This, we learn, is totally incorrect and with- out foundation.

In the inscriptions to be placed on the ped estral of Cleopatra’s Needle, it has been re- solved at the personal suggestion of the Queen, to add the names of the men who lost their lives in the attempt to rescue the crew of the Cleopatra during the storm in the Bay of Bis- cay in October. 1577.

Tne attendance of spectators at the Carnival to night will, we ats te be very large. We advise those of our readers who wish to secure a good seat, to go early, as the demand for tickets is thrice greater than last year. We have beer requested to state that children under 13 years of age will be admitted to-night for 25 cents.

SELIVEAU ALBERTITR AND On Co.—We direct attention to the notice of a call made by the directors of the Beliveau Albertite and Oil Cempany. A doubt was entertained of the legal sufficiency of the call made on the 24th September, but the directors, at a meeting held on the 7th February, instant, made a fifth callof 25 percent. This is not intended to apply to thuse stockholders who have paid the fifth instalment, under the notice of the 24th September last.— St. John Telegraph.

A GENTLEMAN, slowly passing in the vicinity of the Methodist Church last evening, was ladiiously upset by an urchin driving a stout eur attached toa sleigh. He heard a number of “‘haloos’”’ in the rear, and. before he had time to realize his situation, the canine team eame dishing up; part of the sleigh runners causht the gentleman’s right heel, and @ .used*him to roughly exccu'e a backwardsom- ersault. An unusual shower of oaths followed that mischievous boy and his canine.

Tat State Dinner at Rideau Hall comes off this evening. ‘The invited include Gov- ernors of Provinces and their Secretaries, Ministers of State, Deputy Ministers, Judges of the Supreme Court, Clerk of the Privy Council, Clerks of the Senate and Commons, Presidents of the Executive Councils of the Provinces, Usher of the Black Rod of the Senate and Sergeant-at- Arms in the Commons, General Sir Selby Smyth and several other officials. Her Royal Highness will give an ‘“ At Home” to the ladies of those officials who were present at the State Dinner. Governors Letellier, of Quebec, MacDonald of Ontarso, and Chandler, of New Bruns- wick, will be the only Governors present. The Governors will attend the opening of Parliament in uniform, except Governor Chandler, who will be present in plain clothes. On Friday and Saturday evenings, from 8.30 o'clock, the Princess holds a levee; persons with initials from A to L béing received the first evening, and from M te Z on the second evening. There will be a ball at Government House on the night of the 19th, when there will bea great crush.

Bishop Conroy’s Successor.

The Right Rev. Monsignor Wovodlock, who has long been Rector of the Catholic University at St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin, has been appointed Bishop of Ardagh, the See having been vacated by the death of Bishop Conroy, who had held it since 1871. This diocese includes nearly the whole of County Longford, the greater part of Leitrim and portions of King’s County,

THE ABANDONMENT OF THE James H. Myricx.—On the 27th ult., a Board of Trade Inquiry was begun at Liverpool into the cir- cumstances attending the abandonment of the barque James H. Myrick, owned by Mr. John A. Matheson, of Campbelltown, P. E. L, and commanded by Capt. George Dowell. The crew made most serious allegations against the | captain, and there was an imputation that the vessel had been wilfully cast away. The own- er was aiso affected. by the charges, and the Commissioner thought it might be advisable for the captain to procure witnesses from the Imbros, and the inquiry was adjourned ac cordingly sine die.
