statement showing the number of patents issued by the United States and foreign Governwuients, from the earliest periods of this work to December Slst., 1897. In this, the total foreign product (from fifty= three countries) amounts to 1,122,724 pat- ents, while the United Staes alone hra 606,423 more than one-half of all the bal~ ance of the world’s inventive product.

Of the foreign patents, France jeaas with 286,081 ; Great Britain has 252,990 to her credit, and Belgium with 139,742, and Germany with 113,254,cem s next in order of patent insportance. The smallest iseues were in Siberia aid the Babamas, each having 2, and in St. Helena, 4.

It is stated that the number of applica- tions for patents received during the year 1897 was the largest in the history of the office, and that there is a steady increase in this branch of the work.

i We regret to have to chronicle the death of Mr. Andrew McDougall, of Rice Peint, which took place ou the sixth inet, afier an illness of about four months, which he bore | | with Christian patience. Deceased was >| the fourth son of the late Archibald Me- Dougall, elder, of Nine Mile Creek: We may say that Mr. McDougal! was | One of the pioneer settlers of Rice Point, having resided on the farm on which he | died for,tifty years. Decea-ed married,forty | eight years ago, Margaret, sixth daaghter | of the late Colin McEachern, of Belfast, at | whose hands he received careful! and tev- der nursing during his last illness.
