Agtation Increasing For Brewery In Pictou County
\\'ES'I‘VILLE, N.S. tCleAglta‘ tion is increasing for Nova Scotia's third brewery to be es- tablished in economically de- pressed Pictou County where coal was once the major industry.
"I think it would be a ‘wonder— ful thing for our area.“ Mayo: Alfred Matheson said Tuesday.
This town of 4.200 is in the centre of the province‘s depressed coal mining district.
The proposal for a brewery originated with the Pictou County Labor Council. It won approval and was endorsed by the local town council and the Trenton council nearby,
ESTIMATES COST AT $100,000
Mayor M a t h’ e s o It said he thought a brewery could be built in the area for about $100,000— the same amount the crown— owned Industrial Estates Limited estimates it will cost to establish an Italian textile mill at Stellar- ton, NS.
“We would be centrally located for distribution,” said the mayor. “It would employ a lot of people. And it would be clean, safe em- ployment.
At present there are four br cries in the Maritimes, three
owned by the same interests. The two commonly owned Nova Scotia producers, A. E. Keith and Son and Oland and Son Limited of Halifax, have been strikebound for 13 weeks. '

EMPLOY 150 MEN
Both union and company offi- cials said Tuesday there was no sign of an early settlement. The weekly payroll for both plants which employ about 150 men was more than $8,000.
The two breweries produce about 50 per cent of the beer sold in Nova. Scotia.
Local 361 of the United Brewery and Distillery Workers tCLC) is demanding a 20-cent hourly in- crease now and a further 10 cents next year in a two—year contract. The present basic wage is $1.33 an‘ hour.
