The Rocky Mountain and west- ern states shared in the heat bom- bardment. and the drought ex- tended its far flung domain.

The current heat wave brought death to four persons in Iowa and temperatures oi 103 were recorded at Ottumwa and Keokuk.

Kansas and Missouri remained in the srlp of the 10o degree tom. peratures which laid siege lust Saturday. Reichpresident von‘ Hindenburg Paved Way For Nazi Re- gime, Claims Hitler.

TANNENPJERG, Germany, Aug, 7, -—In a tower room of the National shrine erected in memory of his greatest military victory, the body of President Paul von Hindenburg rested tonight while thousands of his fellow-countrymen waited patiently in flickering torch light for a glimpse of his coffin.

Funeral services in which his sue-i cessor. Chancellor Adolf Hitler, with deep feeling said von I-Iindenburg “opened the door" to the present re- gime delivered the old soldier into his monumental shrine.

The filial rites, which were brief and simple as the Picld Marshal had wished, were conducted on the very spot where he stopped the Russian invasion.

After the coffin had been brought

here from the von I-Iiridenburg est- ate at Neudeck, along 60 miles of torch-lighted road, there was prayer, music, a short talk by an army chap. lain and i-Iitlei-‘s fervent speech in which he declared that the name of von Hindenburg cannot be allowed to die. _ “Twice in the life of a soldier honorable mention comes to him alone-—after a great victory and af- ter weath," said the Chancellor.

He reviewed the liie of the late Reichpresident, beginning with his first battle in the war of 1870.

"His name was like that of un- counted thousands of officers," he declared - "unknown to the great mass of people.

“When the German people 44 years later remembered von Hinden- burgs name the clouds of war hung over Europe. In the worst of these times Kaiser Wilhelm called upon von Hindenburg to take over su- preme command of the army.

“Six days later guns were boom- ing and nine days later church bells rang in celebration of the victory of Tallnenberg.

“Large areas of German land were saved from devastation and from now on everybody in Germany had von Hindenburgs name on his lips- the man who saved the country and lcd the army from victory to victory.

“Unfortunately, he was called too late to head all the armies of the lteicil. Nevertheless, for two years more he inspired that army to un- exalnpled victories.

“The unfortunate end of the WM‘ can under no circumstances be charged against him. It. merely passes judgment on the inability of tlic politicians of that day."

Music followed Hitler's eulogy. Then honor salutes were fired, and finally the coffin was carried up in- to the tower of the great monument.

WINNWBX}. Aug. '1. -- Violence broke out today between police of- ficers nnd clothing strike picketers. Two persons, one a. police constable, were injured and n man who gave his name as E. Weller was arrested on an open charge in connection with the affray.

A heavy brick hurled at Constable Joseph Mulholland cut through the officer's helmet and gushed his head. He was taken to hospital for treat- ment. James Bayden, a. strike pick- eter, was knocked unconscious from a blow on the head during the melee.

Strike of workers oi five clothing companies in the Crowley building has been in progress for nearly two months and at present 13 persons, including several women are await- ing trial on charges arising out of the strike.

VIENNA, Aug ‘l-Cilanceilor Kurt Schuschnigg announced to- night the government agreement to Vice Chancellor Franz Von Papell of Germany as special en- voy to Vienna, at. the same time taking powerful new measures to end Nazi propaganda in Austria.

A government communique an- nouncing Von Parson's acceptance revealed at the same time the granting of sweeping powers to Major Emil Ifey, Minister of the Interior In his capacity of special commissioner for security measures Fey is charged with snuffing out Nazi influence.

The long-delayed acceptance of Von Papen by the new Austrian Government as Chancellor Hitler's special appointee came during a Cabinet meeting.
