Rev. Mr. Larueen said last night that a good test of the character of a young man would be to give him a thousand dollars and see what he would do with it.. (whites) 44 cents; hay, foom 45 to 50 cents; pork (carcass) from 3 to 4} cents; turnips, from 15 to 16 cents.
A Toronto dispatch says :—‘‘ Great ex- citement was caused in St. James’ Cathe- dral yesterday, by a boy in the gallery fir- ing off a pistol, while Rev. Mr. Rainsford was engaged in reading the fifth command- ment. The services were brought to a com- plete standstill, and the boy frightened at what he had done, tore down stairs and out of the door before the astonished verger had succeeded in gathering his wits. It is sup- posed that the young rip having the weap- on with him, could not resist playing with it, and so it went off. Nobody was hurt.
Last Friday while Mr. Wm. Kier was having a boat put on his cart from E. Henry’s mill pond, his horse became some- what frightened, and ran away. Kier, at- tempting to stop him, came in contact with a pile of boards, breaking three of his ribs, and throwing him off his feet. He became tangled in the reins and was dragged some distance, the cart wheel passing over him and otherwise injuring him. He was re- moved to the house of E. Henry, and his wants attended to. He was taken to his home the same evening, but he is still very low.—S. J.

St. ANDREws, Nov. 19.
The Judge’s charge was concluded at half- past eleven o’clock. The Jury then retired to their room. In about twenty minutes they returned into Court, and, in reply to the en- quiry from the Clerk, said they had agreed upon a verdict and had found the prisoners guilty.
Wrs, Ward turned deadly pale and Dowd’s cheeks flushed. With this exception they be- trayed no signs of emotion.
By direction of the Court the prisoners were remanded till two o'clock.
Thomas Dowd and Eliza Ward were sen- tenced by the Judge to be hanged by the neck until dead, on Tuesday, the fourteenth day of January next, within the precincts of the gaol.
Mrs. Ward put her handkerchief to her face and burst into tears.
Dowd grasped the post of the dock to steady himself, His face became pallid.
The prisoners were then remanded to gaol, and the Court adjourned,
Sr. AnpREws, Nov. 20. Thomas Dowd has made a statement, in the presence of the Sheriff, Geo. S. Grummer, Esq., and Warden O'Dell. He states :—
About 4 o'clock on the afternoon of the 9th September last I was returning from berrying, and met a drove of cows, and, fearing that Mulherrin’s bull was with them, I made a de- tour to avoid him, as he was a dangerous ani- mal. I came out on the meadow road at the rising ground beyond the gulley. There I met Ward with a pitchfork and an axe with him. I asked Ward how he was getting along hay- ing. Ward replied, ‘‘I have’nt been haying, aud will never make any more hey.” I said, ‘‘T have been berrying.” Waid then said, **You will never go berrying again; I will kill you;” and he ale a pass at me. with the pitchfork. I laid hold of him and got him down. We tussled for some time; finally Ward promised to make up friends. We walked along the road together, and when we reached the gully Ward struck at me again with the pitchfork. lJ ran around the bushes and he followed me. I then seized the axe and knocked him down. I then ran away a short distance. I turned, came back and _fin- ished him. I was crazy at thetime. (He dis- posed of the body as stated in the first confes- sion.) I buried the hat in the swamp between the body and the road. He states .that.Mrs, Ward knew nothing far as he Knows. - He further says that e was going to make this statement to the court when Mr. Grimmer was delivering his opening address to the jury, but that he had not the power of utterance.
