St. Perrr’s Boys’ Scuoot closed yesterday for the Easter holidays. The Trustees, Messrs. Hodgson and Watson, were present. The former distributed the prizes. In the first division, Thomas D. Rogers carried off first prize, Ernest A. Earle taking second, In the second division, John P. Moore obtained the prize. After the distribution of prizes the Band played a few selections. The School was then dismissed.

A Sovris correspondent writes :—‘‘ Mr. Herbert Beer, of your city, was here this week, and purchased from the Inspector of Fisheries a very valuable horse, which, it is said, was tormerly employed as a ferry boat on Grand River, between Annandale and Howlett’s Point. It is thought that, pending the construction of the tunnels, Mr. Beer in- tends to use the ‘ Leviathan’ either at the Capes or on the Hillsborough. We wish Mr. Beer success in his new enterprise.” a

Provincial Rifle Association Meet- ing.

Tue annual general meeting of this Asso ciation, was held last evening in the City Court Room. There was a large and representative assemblage. The meeting having been called to order by the President, Major Irving, the Secretary read the annual report and submit- ted a statement of the finances, which state- ment was on motion adopted. Capt. Weeks the officer in command of last year’s Ottawa team, submitted a report of the proceedings of the team, which on being read elicited quite a lively discussion in regard to the treatment of the members of our Association, in comparison to that accorded to the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia contingents in the matter of transport over Government rail- ways, on the occasion of their annual visit to O.tawa to take part in the Dominion Rifle Association prize meetings.

Eleccion of officers and the Council for the ensuing year was then proceeded with, and resulted as follows :—

Boston, April 6.

A tire broke out in the printing estab- lishment of Wright & Potter, on Milk Street, and extended so rapidly that upon the arrival of the tire department the flames were rushing from the three upper c*v11es of the elegant stone building. Wright & Potter, who are Staie printers, carried a large stock, all their State work is lvacued. Their loss is estimated at about $70,000. O. J. Rand lose on stock $15,000. Paul & Co.’s stock is damaged to the amount of $5,500. The building was damaged to the extent of $9,000. Several firemen received slight injuries.

The Opposition Leadership.

Orrawa, April 6,

It is stated that Mr. Blake resolved to resign the leadership of the Opposition be- cause evidently the people did not believe that he and his party were the ones to preach to them about honesty and decency in the conduct of public affairs. The other chief men of his party have persuaded him that it is not right to set himself up asa preacherof publicmorality orto pretend that in his party centres all political morality. There is now, it is stated, an understand- ing arrived at. The party is to pursue its crooked way and act the hypocrite, and he will lead them. The assumption of high political morality by the Opposition is refreshing. Its actual possession would however be better.

A Bogus Collector.

NIAGARA Fats, April 6.

A man named Stevens has been arrested for swindling Canadians. He represented himself as a Collector of Customs, and noti- tied a large number of Canadian firms that packages were held for them, and would be forwarded on payment of charges ranging from $2 to $10. The preliminary evidence disclosed ten Toronto victims.

The Missing Sealer. St. Joun’s, N. F., April 6. The steamer Hector which arrived did not see anything of the Eagle. It was said the Hector had passed through a lot of wreck stuff, but this is not true, and the people in St. John’s are beginning to hope that the Eagle may after all be safe.

Haxieax, April 6. The American fishing schooner Everett Steel put into this port from the Western Banks to-day. She lost her dories and wished to purchase a new supply here, but was unable owing to the 1818 treaty.

A Switchman Injured. Bevvevitie, Ont., April 6. James Cummings, switchman, was _ prob- ably fatally injured this afternoon while rescuing a child in danger of being run down by a train.
